my dad and i figured it was the distributer but i have reset that thing in there a few times made sure it all lined up with the 1st piston made sure the piston was at the top of the cylinder. how else do you play with the timing.

sometimes i would just turn the dist and have someone crank it until it fired and ran good

i would check for spark first, just pull a plug/wire and ground it to the frame and crank to see if its sparkin

ok i can do that i know the engine will run with a little bit of playing with it but i was not sure what to mess with. the engine ran strong but i changed the intake and carb from a 2 barrel to a 4 barrel

you guessed it the one thing i did not check for was spark and there is none. one of the most simple thing to check and it slipped my mind.
                    thank you

you said the rotor is lined up with the #1 piston. Do you mean the #1 plug wire on the cap? Some mopars you point the rotor towards the #1 piston but not on a SBC

i lined up the #1 spark plug wire withe the #1 piston, but when the cap got took off the rotor was pointing the rong way.

Thats the first thing you check for if your having probs with your car spark, fuel, and compression

well it's got spark now but now when it goes to fire it shoots a mist of gas out the top of the carb and wont start. any suggestions to fix this

piston was at TDC but was it the compression stroke?
sounds like the dist is 180 off
