Got a couple suggestions for you, do what you want with them

If you want to go with a 4 speed try picking up a 2004r if you can. they were the predecessor to the 700r4, reason they're better, all steel internals vs the 700's aluminum. However, if you aren't going to be on the highway much, eh, 400 should be fine, even a th350.

For your Vortec heads, not sure how much you are planning to spend total with doing work to them but there's a company called Racing Head Service that sells their own version of Vortecs. If you were to get RHS iron vortec bare heads, add the valves and springs you need and you'll be into a vortec style (better casting than the GM junk) with all the mods you would 'want' in a vortec and not much more than the GM price. Plus the RHS casting is almost 3 pounds more material than the GM casting. (beefed up in the areas the GM castings crack)

Pro Torker™ Vortec heads flow 27 more cfm at 0.500” lift -right out of the box.

Pro Torker™ Vortec heads come standard with radiused, hardened exhaust seats, multi-angled intake seats, and “Fast Burn” 64cc combustion chambers. To ensure maximum versatility, Pro Torker™ Vortec heads feature dual pattern intake compatibility to allow use with virtually any intake manifold, early or late. Also equipped with 1.550” valve spring seats and valve guides engineered to avoid retainer to guide clearance issues when used with high lift camshafts, Pro Torker™ Vortec heads have overcome all of the shortcomings normally associated with OEM Vortec heads.

Again, just a thought, might be worth checking into. I like that you can run a regular intake with them instead of being stuck buying and running a vortec pattern intake.

Agree with everything OT said there...RHS does have a nice product.

As for the trans...both the 700R4 and 200R4 are nice for highway cruising...I think a TH400 is overkill...

But if you want to save some budget, I'd just go with a TH350...might be all you need...

                      Just my .02...

                            ???????????????????????????/

he wants to put in my 3:73's but we think not sure that he is running 3:42's
wants 3 spd for the track but 4 spd for the rd at a sensible price. this is a nice budgeted build that has been getting a little more done every winter the only prob is that he drives it all summer and stores his probe for winter use only. cant really afford to put 2 cars on the rd at one time and in this day and age im starting to fall in line with that cept for the amount of money wraped up in the ride.
