  • Need advice on second gen project car

This car has been sitting behind a local shop for years, and until recently I didn't think it was for sale. My friend told me that the guy offered it to his dad for $2000, so I am wondering if it looks like a good start for a long term project. These are the best pics I have currently, but I will get more when I go up there tomorrow. What are some common issues that might make or break this deal?
p.s. this car isn't particularly rare, is it? I would hate to cut up and customize an irreplaceable car.

Looks pretty rough and rust is a problem with second gens. Wait till Todd and Jeff chime in those are the two opinions you want to hear. I know nothing about second gens, but I am sure Jeff does!

If I recall the espirit was a kinda plush v6 version, I don't think it was limited edition. Looks like normal rust areas around window chrome trim. If your interested I would definately crawl under the car to check out the floor pan for rust.

Esprits are kind of rare! My mom had a 76 (i think?) exactly like that. The espirit was a base V8 car with some of the trans am flashiness. Wheels, rear spoiler (with a bird decal on the back), dual exhaust, i think some had the bird on the hood too. But i do remember reading that the esprit was the lowest production model in the lineup.

Great, that is what I was afraid of. Don't want to go all out on a car that was in limited production

The rear frame rails also rotted out real bad. Look inside the trunk area really good and pull the carpet up and look at the floor boards. Also look under the car in areas that someone might have put a floor jack under it and crushed some of the under body area.

I have a 77z28 only 14,328 were made, rare car ask yourself how many 77z28s are still around? I have had the car ten years this year. When I got the car it was all orig with like 14,000 miles on it, you should see it now! I say buy it and make it a hotrod.

I say buy it if your looking for a long term project this would be it. I'd say follow what Munster and Ezcruzin said, but you can also take it to a frame guy. Or better yet if you know how to weld then not a bad project.

This car definitely needs some sort of modification. I would suggest adding some brand new bumpers to the mix and you can go from there.

Have not bought it, I am kind of in a financial situation right now and cant afford to spend any more money until I get some stuff sold. But the car is still sitting there.
