  • Need to drop tranny...difficulty?

I need to inspect the flywheel/bolts. I know I need to drop the tranny. It's an 01 manual. How difficult is this and how time consuming? I'm suspecting my flywheel bolts are loose or the flywheel is cracked/broken. I've never done this, but I did just do a timing set in case that gives you an idea of my capacities. Done head gaskets before as well. Thanks!

    Get a trans jack.
    Makin Torque.

I can have my trans out and on the bench in 20 minutes, no trans jack.

Bellhousing, pressure plate, etc is a different story. Plus it's highly unlikely that the noise you have is related to a cracked flywheel or loose bolts.

According to the youtube videos its dead nuts on sound wise and location wise. Also no shavings in the oil and oil pressure is 40+ through the rpm band. What else can it be hoogies? Gotta be the flywheel.

Difficult? Heck no! 5 or 6 neutral slams and most of it will be out. Now, "in" is a bit more involved after the above removal process.....

Not too difficult - I found some great how-to videos. You'll need to really lift the car up high, and I do recommend a trans jack. You'll also need some really long (24") socket extension bars. I bought both at Harbor Freight.

I did have a helluva time separating the bellhousing from the engine. I think the dowels were corroded up. Took me quite a while hitting it with a deadblow hammer and pry bar between the engine and bellhousing.

Tough for me to remember, but overall, I would say I had a solid 5-7 hours on trying to remove that thing. I'm counting lifting the car, removing the Y pipe, etc. I am sure I could do it faster now, but that's how long it took me to figure things out. I also was 100% solo on jackstands in my garage.

While you're at it, you may as well replace the clutch and have the flywheel surfaced. You'll be happy that you did down the line!

Funny that you mention that, I'm in the market for a spec stage 2 clutch and flywheel, might go billet or aluminum.
