  • looking to cam my z28

been checking out the cc306, and I want to know what kind of power gains I would see? and how long (roughly) would it take to do all of this WITH and WITHOUT power tools, I don't have an air compressor but can borrow one if the time saved is over a few hours, also what do I need to change out? I know the usual of what I should change out like the timing chain and gears, and springs (what ones would be best? looking for a decent price) basically I need EVERYTHING for a cam swap, looking to buy a nice cam also, maybe lt4, cc306 or similar, but need a COMPLETE list of items needed, thanks guys/girls

Not to just throw the question back at you but i kinda am... i think we/I can be more helpful if you do a little more research on your own on some of the tech boards like camaroz28.com, lt1 section on ls1tech, and ltxtech.com. Some of the basic parts lists are readily availible there. There are many parts on that may not be necessary but highly recommended. Compile a more detailed plan and we can critique your choices from there. Also, how are you using the car? If youre doing anything but drag racing dont just look at peak numbers but the overall power curve. Cc306 is somewhat of a peaky cam from what i recall. Also if you want to learn more about cam specs i posted a sticky thread in the intake/exhaust section that explains the numbers.

LT1s are finicky engines and the payoffs will be substantial if you take your time in the planning phase. A well planned and welll matched budget build can easily beat a slapped together brand-name "horsepower TV" build.

Not to be a copy "cat-er" but if I could do it all again I'd mimic what Joel did with his build.

I did a very similar build to Joel's, just with a LE custom cam. If you are going to be doing the work of putting a cam in, get an AI or LE cam.

Basically I want a car that is street able and can still be a daily driver. But have the nuts to put me sideways when I need it to.

I'm trying to break into the lower 12s with my car. Its already run a 12.7 at Milan on motor.

So I'm trying to break into the 12 flat maybe even a high 11. Like a 11.9

no the heads have been shaved down 2 thousands and im not sure about the pistons in the motor I didn't find any paperwork on those, but the cyl inspection camera I used when I put it in their they looked like just your average 0.030 over pistons, I could be wrong though, but there was defiantly a freak thing about this motor when I bought it and didn't even throw any mods into it when it was all stock to my knowledge,

That its a huge cam. I wouldn't run it without ARP rod bolts so you can spin it to where it wants to go.

yeah it seems like ALOT of work to install that cam and I don't want to spin my motor that high, so im probably going to stick to the lt4 hot cam or cc306 MAYBE a cc503,

its no more work to install that cam than any others. 503 would be the one id choose of the cams youve listed so far, but as stated an AI or LE cam is going to run a lot better than any of those comp shelf grinds that were designed 15 years ago.

if a 355 running 12.7 on motor doesnt put you sideways when you want to and drive home youre doing something wrong..

Youre looking at the CC306 and my guess is because when you googled LT1 cam, you saw a few videos with the 306 and fell in love with the sound and idle ( i know i did) but you have to realize an opti will not like to spin at the numbers where a 306 makes its peak power. And from what ive read a CC306 has pretty bad street manners. So like Joel said think about how you want to drive it/where you want it to make power. and all that goodstuff and im sure Joel and others can set you up right.

The CC306 is listed as 1800-5800 by Comp. Will very on your heads but the stock PCM will limit at 7000. I would not be afraid to spin an Opti to that. All the time, no but for racing sure why not.

Everyone hates on the Optispark. If you know what you are doing it won't cause problems.
