  • Lug Removal

So when working on installing my new wheels, I found that the thread on one of my lugs was messed up. Fortunately, I had the rear axle from my old sixxer sitting around. I took a couple of lugs out of that one, but then when I went to remove the bad lug from my Z28, I found that the hub has some sort of splined ring (I believe it's for the ABS) behind it. It's close enough that even after I hammer the lug out, there's not enough clearance to remove the bold. What do I have to do to remove it?

sometimes you have to remove the shaft from the axle. have heard if you pull the abs sensor that you can slide the stud out that hole

I can go back and look again, but I'm pretty sure that removing the sensor still won't solve the issue that the spline ring is in the way. And I'd really rather not have to remove the axle shaft...

I took another look at it, and even without the sensor that ring is in the way. Do LS1 cars not have that?

They may be different.. I have reluctor wheels on my axles also.. Do you have traction control? My rear is a 4 channel, ABS/TCS.. I thought all 4th Gen rears were the same except for brakes.. Could be wrong..

yeah I have traction control (though it's never worked as long as I've owned the car...I need to get on that). I'll take a couple pics tomorrow that will probably clarify what I'm talking about.

this sounds awkward....is this what yours looks like?

If it is, you have a factory TC system. 96-97 cars have this system and are different than the 98-02 cars. 93-95 do not have this. My system worked when I got the car but when I installed my headers it quit working(i think its brake sensor related)

You have to open up the rear end and there is a little clip that locks it in place. Great time to replace the axle bearing (i think thats what its called)

its called a reluctor or tone ring its for the abs/tcs system. cars that are 3 channel and only have abs have one near the carrier with a sensor on top of it. You will have to remove the axle and pry off the reluctor ring then remove the studs and reinstall.
                          Doing less with more

My 4th gen rear was only the 3 channel so I didnt have to deal with the tcs ring

Thanks a ton, Nate. That's exactly what I'm looking at. Good thing you posted those pics too, because Photobucket is being stupid today and isn't letting me upload anything for some reason. Also, what you mentioned about the axle bearing...I have a bit of end play (in and out) in my rear end right now. The one auto-x I went to last summer, the only reason I passed tech inspection was because the guy doing it was a friend of mine. Would replacing the axle bearing take care of that too?
