Does it ever end with these cars??

Ok, so 900 miles trouble free (my new record btw) and I stop to get a 40 dollar front end alignment and as I should expect by now, cant do alignment. UNTIL i replace both outer tie rods and the right front wheel bearing and hub!!!! Got a quote of $421.00 for parts and labor. Good? Bad? Suggestions where else to check?? I am so considering selling this money pit. My Wife sure isnt a pleasure to be around when it comes to spending money on this car lol.

This is going to sound awful...but...it is 17 years old...maintenance needs to be done.

This is a key reason why cars depreciate for 25 years before they begin to appreciate...people run into problems with them and bail on them cheap...

Trust me, you will get to the point where when the wife starts b!ching about a repair, that you can go "C'mon, outside of oil changes and insurance, we haven't spent a dollar on that car in 3 years."

everytime there is an issue with our 1996 astro van with 250k on it my mom tells my dad to sell it a nd buy a nice new car. he says the same thing, i havnt had a car payment in ten years how am i gonna complain about a $100 fix!? lol funny to see the same smart logic with other people.

Yea lol, I know, when it runs I cant stop smiling when I drive it. I want to get to the point where when she goes on a rant about money and the car its cause I bought a "Necessity" lol, headers, cam, speakers, you know, IMPORTANT stuff, not money just to keep the dang thing on the road lol. Opti, water pump, plugs, wires, ENGINE, trans mount, now tie rods and wheel bearings. I could have bought the Vette I was looking at by now.

My Grandpa just groaned from Heaven lol, would argue for hours that cars have Engines, not motors. "Motors are electric!!!! God D*** it, cars have engines!" lol not trying to start a debate or any crap with you Ron, I just thought of my Grandpa he passed away 5 years ago, when I saw your post and it made me think of him and smile lol. EDIT: OK, if you had to buy (err...find) a new crankshaft, I can see it...

thats the price, new pistons 60 over, special beacause of the turbo, push rods, pontiac, special, roller rockers new cam, all machine work, dont forget it sat with water in it from 92 after the fire till 04 or 05, ALOT of machine work. missing parts had to be bought, bead blast the melted wires and hoses off, and what ever els had to be done, the wife flipped, but now loves to drive it. and to the fix here and there... i just put new exhaust on the car for 200 because i wanted a diffrent sound. no need for electric cut outs.($180 for them) you see nothing is cheap/ im getting my rear wheels widednd for $175 a piece in plymouth. your $420 bucks is nothing. oh yea widend rime..... WIDER tires, 295 50 16"s

I got the same treatment last summer. I bought tie rod ends for 18.00 each and put them on then went and got alignment done . It is a 16 year old car.

That's what I was going to suggest, get the parts and install them yourself. Don't pay someone else to do something you can easily do in your driveway with a jack and some basic hand tools. You're just throwing away your money if you pay to have everything done. Take care of the hard work yourself, then get the alignment done. That's honestly the best way to go about it.

agreed but go STRAIGHT to the alignment shop after you replace them or youll ruin a set of tires too.
