  • LT1 exhaust questions

I'm probably going to get some longtubes for my LT1, so I'm trying to figure out if I want to do a typical cat-back setup or if I want to get a shop to do a custom true-dual setup. I found a magnaflow kit online for $435, and I just called a local shop and they said they could do a dual setup for about $400 (as long as I supply the cats). What do you think?

also, here are the headers I was looking at:

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Paces...item2eac3cdf81

I also need to know if I have to get a y-pipe or not, which depends on if I do a true dual or a normal cat-back.

First if you have a 3.4 you don't have a LT1? Second why put true dual exhaust on a 6 banger?

Well generally people list them all.

If I recall you need a Y pipe because the original Y-Pipe is stock pipe size so it won't hook up to the collectors.

Yeah, I need to edit the sig. See this thread for the deal: http://www.mifbody.com/vbulletin/sho...-plot-thickens............

If I'm not mistaken, I won't need a y-pipe if I run a true-dual setup. That's part of the reason I need to figure out for sure what I'm doing sooner rather than later.

I would do a true dual set up just like Joel, or do a Loudmouth I setup.

if a shop's gonna do it, I have to have cats (stupid emissions laws). Their price is around $400 for the whole thing--polished pipes, mufflers, tips--installed, as long as I provide the cats. So I'm probably gonna try to find a couple hi-flow cats on ebay or something.

It all depends on your tastes I guess. I would rather have a good cat back with a cutout so that I can decide when i want it loud and when i dont. With true duals the car is ALWAYS loud, and rattles the heck out of tiny plastic interior parts at particular RPMs. Its your decision, but I wouldnt do true duals with cats, I would try to find a shop that will do it without them. Good luck with what ever you chooose. Eric L

definitely listen to this. I love my true duals for my HOBBY car. But i would never be able to put up with them on something i drive all the time. They make the sweetest sound on earth outside the car but they are always loud and ANYTHING dumped at the axle drones inside the car. For this reason I have been considering tailpipes, over the axle.

wouldn't that depend more on the mufflers installed, rather than the setup itself?

Yeah, this car's gonna be my summer DD, so something not overly obnoxious would be nice. I was figuring on having tailpipes, rather than having them end as soon as yours. Would that make a significant difference in noise levels?

No, it depends more on where the exhaust lets out. Heres my personal story. I have BBk shorty headers into a 3 inch Y pipe. I deleted the Cat and replaced it with a manual cutout. Following that I have a Flowmaster American Thunder Cat back system that has a 2 chamber muffler. (The loud one). I raced it years ago with a TH350 and 3600 converter and ran 12.87 that day with the cutout open. I closed the cutout and ran a 12.91 that same day. So, you tell me, on a bolt on car, do you really need true duals. If you want to make noise than go for it. If your doing it cause your convinced you need it, than I wouldnt waste the time. Its up to you. But, im sure wichever you decide, it will sound sweet. Cause LT1s sound good with just about ANY exhaust, lol. Eric L

well after talking it over with my dad, I think I'm probably gonna hold off on the exhaust stuff for now. We gotta get the thing running first of all, because if I don't get it on the road by the end of May I'm screwed . I just secured a transmission this weekend, so we're gonna put that in, use the crappy exhaust that was on it when we got it, and make sure it runs before we start going crazy with anything else. I'll just do that stuff this summer.
