  • The voices of reason Win but still need opinions.

After driving a friends G8 GXP last night on Woodward I may listen to the many voices of reason that said to rebuild the old 10bolt and add a Girdle.
I simply love that car more now then I did before and would rather spend the cash towards getting a G8 GT then putting a little overkill on a 12 year old F-body.
After all the original rear did (as said before) last 130K+ miles and I barely drive it hard enough anymore. The rest of the cash is better spent on some RLB LCA and nice chunk down for a DD in the Fall.

Next topic of discusson is what gear to upgrade to ?

4.10's seem out of the question based on strength, so I was thinking either Motive 3.90 or 3.73's.
Remember RPM and fuel mileage are of little concern as this is an M6. Also This car will NOT see any DR, only street tires.

    All opinions welcome.

If you just going to run a regular old street radial that wont hook till the top of first, I would go with 4.10s. I had them for quite a while in my 94 and they worked out well. I did a 4000 rpm clutch dump with a centerforce clutch and et streets, lol, and after that they made a little noise, lol. After owning a 6 speed car with 4.10s and now a car with 3.42s, i wouldnt waste my time with anything in between. IMHO 3.73s arent going to make a big enough differance to warrent spending the money on them. What is wrong with the rear end in the car, is it broken or making noise? Im kinda in the same position as you with my SS. I already have a girdled cover and am considering building some gussets kinda like Joel posted on here a while back. I think for what guys like us do it would be a good compromise. Best of luck with what ever you decide. Eric L

I just had EVI put 4.10's in my stock 10 bolt with a girdle and its probably the best mod I've done. I know it looses a little strength but I don't beat on my car like some do so should last a while. After having 3.42's and going to 4.10's its night and day in a good way. Don't bother doing anything less or I think you will be dissapointed, 4.10's in an M6 are meant to be

I agree about the 3.73's not being a big enough change from the stock 3.42's and it only crossed my mind since I'm keeping the stock 10 bolt.
But I've heard horror stories about the 4.10's with their smaller pinion having strength issues. The 3.90's seemed like a good alternative and would still provide a significant change. As for the rear itself besides having a small pinion seal leak from day one it has given me no problems untill some bad wheel hop last year. Car is at 138K miles currently.
The rear will be all new with my choice of gear and a Girdle, so I was just looking for some other guys experience to aid in my gear selection.
The emphasis though is still on reliability as I would prefer to not be messing with this again in the near future.

              1) I never launch harder then 3000rpm
              2) Car will never see anything but street rubber
              3) will hold up to the occasional powershift

So if you can sell me on the fact that it will hold well against a somewhat aggressive driver on the street then I pretty much will be sold on 10 bolt w/4.10's

"I barely drive it hard enough anymore"

Just leave the 3.42 in it and you still have great mileage and save the money for the G8 GT
Or does your rear need to rebuilt?

The rear is howling like a Werewolf esp. on the freeway and since any rebuild will include my choice of gears why wouldn't anyone want to increase torque and more effectively use the powerband by changing the gears ?
Besides if I even considered going 3.42's again I'd at least just go 3.73's.
BTW the difference between 3.42's and 4.10's on the freeway in 6th is only about 3-400 rpm, which is not a bad tradeoff for the ability to use all of 4th gear at the track.

I'd just reuse the stock gears as well, your never gonna hook on street tires so why bother weakening the 10 bolt?

it will help in a roll race as much as a launch. You want close ratios in a manual so you can shift faster and harder. My car can almost finish the quarter mile in 3rd gear with the 3.42. Ryans car was. and that is not optimal when 4th is just a short step away.

point taken, in that case the 3.90s should be a perfect medium IMO.
