  • OBD I vs OBD II?

Trying to figure out what the pro's and con's of each are. This applies to 94-97 cars.

    What do you think?

Im not looking for a thread on a different page, I want to know what our members think.

I, for one, wish my car was OBD I. '96 was a screwed up, transitional year for my car.

      in a nutshell:

OBD2 is better (more advanced) but because it was the beginning years it can also be more problematic than OBD1. OBD1 is much more simple to tune, it has less tables with advanced settings.

I know LS1 PCMs have faster data processors so the same probably applies to LT1 OBD2 as well.

Also one MAJOR pro about OBD1 is open source tuning, nothing is VIN locked.

That and, because my PCM being a stand alone type of thing. I can't use hp tuners or any kind of programmer to tune it on the car. If I was certain I could just throw a '97 PCM in there in place, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

OBD2, more parameters = easier to diagnose a problem. Its like solving a mystery, is it going to be easier if you have 15 pieces of evidence, or 1500? And as joel said the new pcms have more processing power, allowing you to spin the motor more, and other things like compensating for a certain condition, happen faster. Probably not enough to matter, but its a piece of mind thing for me.

I did the swap from OBD2 to OBD1 in my 97 SS. I already had the tuning software for obd1, and it was what i was used to. I have no problems with it. Eric L

I want to switch to OBD2 just so I can use Aeromotive Interceptor gauges and have more options for tuning.

Nope - just like LT1 vs LS1, A4 vs M6, Camaro vs Trans Am, ... T-top vs Hardtop... can't think of any others. It's all on personal opinion and what you want.

95 is 100 percent obd 1. The only thing obd2 is the aldl plug. I used a 95 computer in my 94 a couple times. Its just the plug. Eric L

I would go obd1 much easier and cost effective for tuning. True it doesn't have as much stuff as obd2, but then again most seems to be emissions stuff. I had my 383 on obd1 without a problem running in closed loop with the maf. If your that worried about the limitations of either lt1 factory pcm, you should look into a stand alone. I've had some experience with of and ms pcm's, they are completely different(even when comparing both obd2 versions).
