  • Dex cool or Prestone

Been reading alot of threads on this on various boards, which do you use. Getting all my fluids changed this week and was curious to which you guys ran.

Edit: Basically the green or the orange

DO NOT MIX THE TWO! The green stuff is supposed to be changed every two years the dex cool is every 5 years.

People like to bash dex cool but, but I have no reason to hate it. I know a few guys at a radiator shop and they suggest it should be changed alittle earlier than 150,000/5 years. (they were not trying to get my business, my employer does a good amount of business with them already)
In the past after my car is 5 years old, I drain and fill the radiator yearly. Usually it is only a 1/3 of the system so your continuously adding fresh stuff, and it is very easy to do. I am not a fan of pulling knock sensors or hoses etc.

Remember coolant is corrosive as it ages... and it is one of the main fluids that rarely get changed.

          Go Green

I have had some bad things happen with Dexcool like blockages and eroded gaskets.

im a mechanic for a living and i seen some some pretty bad shit happen with dex cool the stuff turns into sludge/jello inside the engine before the recommended interval so we use a yellow coolant called global that is compatable with damn near everything...also i dont know if anyone knows but gm is actually sueing prestone because of this problem so id recommend the yellow global coolant.

            Doc

Good point you bring up. We use the yellow stuff at work as well.

Prestone also makes the yellow stuff. Just look for the yellow bottle that says it mixes with both, I think EVERYWHERE carries it.

I'm not sure what's in mine anymore... it came from the factory with DexCool, and when I bought it this past February it had DexCool in it. Then, sometime in April I believe, I had both radiator hoses replaced while doing a bunch of the last owner's deferred maintenance projects, and it came back from the shop with what looks like standard ethylene glycol. However, it may be the universal stuff as well. If I end up flushing the whole system next spring, I'll probably go universal just to stay safe.

I went green but before I did I flushed out my system with water completely, ran it on water for about a month and a half, changing out the water twice. Hope I've got enough antifreeze in there though.

I plan to at some point switch in the BeCool biodegradable coolant sometime soon.

What's the advantage of the BeCool other than that it's biodegradable?
