  • Need LT1 help!

spent all night and this morning getting my motor back together with the brand new head gaskets & head bolts since they were improperly installed the first time i built this new engine. before this fix the only problem the car had was the bad head gaskets & head bolts, nothing else noticeable.

NOW, we cant get the motor to fire up! its a fast prolonging crank and the motor will keep cranking fast but just wont start, almost like theres no fuel being delivered or something. the motor is also backfiring! there were no fuel problems beforehand and theres a half tank of gas in it and you can clearly hear it engage. we did my valve lash 3 times to make sure it was perfect and im pretty sure the wires are routed correctly off the optispark.

theres only 215 miles on this new engine and i really want to enjoy it before this summer is over, i already had to miss the dream cruise because of it.
If someone who is quite knowledgeable with lt1's i would GREATLY appreciate if you could come and help me get it going and correct any of my mistakes. i would gladly give you gas money if thats an issue.

1996 Trans Am. 355 LT4 + some go fast mods.

May sound like a stupid question, but if its backfiring... Are the plug wires right?

      Other than that, fuel pressure?

i would go with SMAN shouldnt be backfiring and if it was a fuel problem you wouldnt really be backfiring...... check your wires make sure they are good and check for spark by your coil ect......

opti drive was probably installed in the wrong keyway, therefore your car is getting fuel and spark just not together... and the gas is being ignited at the wrong time. (your backfiring). there is only one keyway that fits, but there are two more wrong ones that are close which you can pretty much force it into without much effort.

first check all the fuses, then the best way to determine if opti is installed wrong. take off the cover and check roter for correct location at top dead center. then you will know if thats the problem. If you just pull the opti you won't know. we did install Brians wrong like Joel said the first time. If you can get a hold of fuel pressure gauge that would help to eliminate that problem.

The car is lake orion larry.

The optispark is hooked up fine, it ran great since i installed it the first time and i haven't removed it. im going to check the plug wires again today, they just seemed to go on correctly quite easily the first time i put them on i cant imagine me messing them up, and maybe i put those fuel injector wires on wrong? i cant imagine messing those up either but .. gahh this is stressing me out.

oh i thought this was your first startup.

the fuel injector harness should be shaped to fit the intake manifold, kinda hard to mess those up.

what about something simple like a gummed up fuel filter if the car sat for a while?

negative, there are 215 on this new lt1

i figured the same thing about the injector wires they were pretty simple the first time, maybe i just misplaced them throughout the anticipation of getting the car to woodward.

the car has been sitting for about .. a month now id say and i just put a brand new fuel filter on it with the build.

im really thinking its something simple though that im just overlooking. and not a complete catastrophe that im unaware of that miraculously happened from going from running fine with white smoke to sitting for a month

I am not an expert just some things I am noticing:

You have spark, it's back firing
You have fuel, it's back firing

Maybe a couple of the wires are switched on the opti? I would start re-tracing the wires. Eliminate all the easy things. Keep us updated, Good Luck!

you can still have spark if your coil is going out alot of the time coils and distributors dont just die completely they give you signs first that they are dieing...... it can still be many thing even the fuel pump still they just dont out of nowhere all the time.....

Well im out of ideas.. i got there today, one of the ignition grounds broke off that 3/8 stud so i bought a new eyelid, fixed that, went over ALL of my spark plugs and there WERE a few that were misplaced so i corrected them, went over every plug/sensor i could find and made sure they were properly plugged in to their appropriate spots, made sure the injector wires were attached to the corresponding injector... and still .. nothing, it just cranks really fast like its about to run but just will not fire! still backfiring.

i just don't get it guys
