Man, don't be hating on grass roots hot rodding Derek...I applaud people that tackle big jobs like this....no better way to learn.

Your point is completely null - if we took it from the scenario you recommend - buy a v8 car - he would have a car that he only knows as much about the maintenance and history of the parts in the car as the previous owner is going to tell him and in most cases it isn't going to be that much... So instead of Spencer's case where he intimately knows the car he's working on, he'd have a car he's not familiar with and have no experience working on the engine to know where to start...
    X2....Well said Brian.

I would heck for exhaust leaks first...sometimes an exhaust leak can trigger the knock sensors and also a lean code if it's bad enough and in the right spot. Your oil leak could be an independant problem.

I know its not piston slap, that usually goes away after a minute or two. It kinda sounds like an exhaust leak, but my whole exhaust is welded, and I checked all the welds last week, so unless its leaking at the header flange I dont think it can be an exhaust leak.

Im quite sure the oil leak issue is a problem of its own all together, just havent had a chance to get the car on the lift and check it out.

Did you ever have the car scanned to see why the check engine light was on? The code might still be in history as well. That could give a much better explanation of the issue compared to us guessing.

There is no CEL or pending or stored codes. Did some logging and all seems normal.

what gaskets did u use for the headers where they meet the heads. check some of the bolts to see if they are loose. had that happend one time before.

also a side note for the oil leak you ever have the valve covers off when the engine was warm?

Gm gaskets, properly torqued. Valve covers have never been of the car since it was put together.
