  • Im beginning to wonder if my car can.....

Have a day that doesnt end like this......

Moved my car for the first time since I picked it up friday from having the converter bolts replaced. I found a nice puddle of oil on the garage floor.

Also I now notice a VERY annoying TAP TAP TAP, noise, sounds valve train, I assume I need some lifters. To top it all off, I pull in the garage and find my check gauges light on. No idea why, not even the gas is low. Why cant shit just work....

i know how you feel it's taken me a year to get my car correct. and its still not running perfect. when you have money anything is possible, when you budget build, hope for the best.

Sorry to hear man, it can be a love hate relationship with our vehicles sometimes. When you get it running right tho its a great feeling. Good luck and I'd agree the tap sounds valve train. Is it constant or intermittent?

Pretty quiet if it was a cold start, then once it warms up, the noise starts.

That sucks man. I've been super lucky with my car so far *knock on wood*. Only mishaps have been things I've done. Like a 5k clutch drop that ended in a busted 10 bolt.

Make sure they all still have there needle barrings. Its a pretty common failure among LSx's.

So if one lost them, where the F*** do they go? Just float around under the valve cover?

Hate to say it but this is one reason of many I didn't do a v6-v8 engine swap. Especially with used parts. When changing that much crap who knows what number of things could have been installed improperly, or heck you could have done everything right and one of the used parts might have been on its last leg .

Hope you can figure it out though man, hopefully its cheap as well. Has to be incredibly frustrating to put all that work in and then have some issues, my brother went through it with his v6 swap as well.

a busted rocker arm will be pretty loud, and yes the needle bearings do go on them and they end up in the pan. fortunately they cannot be picked up by the tube because the filter stops them but it makes a huge mess. I ran my car for a while after breaking one and when I finally tore the motor apart they were everywhere! start with the simple screwdriver to the valvecover and narrow down the location, then pull the valvecovers and have a look.

You're just pulling for any reason to bash the idea of doing a v6-v8 swap. Your point is completely null - if we took it from the scenario you recommend - buy a v8 car - he would have a car that he only knows as much about the maintenance and history of the parts in the car as the previous owner is going to tell him and in most cases it isn't going to be that much... So instead of Spencer's case where he intimately knows the car he's working on, he'd have a car he's not familiar with and have no experience working on the engine to know where to start...

That said - sorry to hear about the troubles, Spencer. Just gotta work the kinks out and it will be running sweet. Have you checked the oil level? If there's a puddle of oil on the floor, a tapping noise, and a check gauges light on...

Yes, oil level was the first thing I checked, I was waiting for someone to chime in there, haha. Got in the car today and no check gauges light, beats the hell out of me

If a rocker had lost its bearings wouldnt it make the noise when its cold as well?

it would make the noise all the time Spencer, when that happens the rocker is busted and falls off the valve completly so the car will run very rough as well. What your experiencing could be as minor as the notorious piston slap but then again that usually goes away upon warming the car up. It could be an exhaust leak as well, valvetrain problems are usually pretty noticable. When I broke a valvespring the can ran horrible as well and you could tell imediatly something broke, I'mn willing to be thats not your issue but a video will help to diagnose the problem.
