yes the opti must be removed to get to the timing cover, not a big deal if the motor is out.
I think cleaning up and rerouting wires is more of a 'take your time" project that you wouldn't want to rush through. I'm sure Brian will chime in tho and have lots of good advice on all of this.2000 Trans Am l 1967 Firebird

Holy shit 10.5 hours to get the motor out? What the heck were you guys doing?
In the same amount of time we dropped the motor out and stripped down to the bare block, crank, pistons.
And that included eating dinner too.

Started the process at 5:30p yesterday and finished up and 4:00am today! But the motor is out now it is time to pull the heads in the next few days to go get magnafluxed. What should I do to the motor while it's out? I am already planning on cleaning and touching up the engine bay. What is needed to delete the smog system?
Block off plates for the intake, Ebay 15.00.
What about the wiring delete to clean up the pass side of the engine bay? Does anyone know anyone that has an old set of longtubes they want to unload really cheap? Any other stuff any one else has I might be interested in I am open to offers.
I have a Comp 306 that has never been used but you will need new springs for that 175.00.
Just working on a tight budget. Also it seems mine timing chain gasket might be leaking how do I go about changing that?
Do I have to remove the Opti?
Yes, you have to remove the Water Pump, Opti, Oil Pan ( don't miss the Oil level Sending Unit in the side) and then you can remove the cover.
If you need to totaly take the cover off then you will need to remove the Damper and Hub assembly and that is a pressed fit so you will need a puller and a 5/16 Grade 8 bolt so you don't ruin the thredas in the crank snout.
Anyone know anyone who port matches really cheap? Thanx in advance! I will keep everyone updated on the goings on!

Well there is a dinner break from 9:00 to ten and numerous smoke & beverage refill breaks. Plus didnt have a chainfall or chery picker so we had to jack the car up then block it up 7-8 times before we had it high enough to slide out under the pass side wheel well.
Is there anything to reprogram so the smog system being gone dosent throw a code or anything?
Editors note: This was the first rear wheel motor I have pulled! with no real guide or anything so checking to make sure I had all the sensors unplugged happened multiple times. Here's a sig with my old ride: (Everyone else has a cool sig I had to do something!)

You can get the EGR stuff programed out but it's not a must.

You guys did good, we had an online guild that B printed that helped. It directed us to put rear wheels on spare rims. then to build suport blocks out of 2"x4" s like lincoln logs 11 high. so having this ready was a big help in time. Our biggest dilema was getting a floor jack to raise rear end. Neighbor had 1 that went from 4" to 22". Once we had that everything went smooth.sigpic

used the same guide from michiganspeed.com! I am the kind of guy that likes to read step by step and go but that guide not so much. we used jackstands in the back and they stayed just fine. Fortunately I had read a guide on gm high-tech performance and they mentioned about pulling the carpet back and unplugging the harness so that was useful. and I am still trying to figure out why GM route the 02 wiring and what not between the a/c lines, if they would have left those connections over the a/c there would be 20min less time getting the engine out right there!
I ordered my smog block offs last night$14.90 on ebay!
Here are some pics, sorry for the quality but I had to take them with my iphone.
The "005" pic is my buddy who is helping and also who's parents place we are doing it at.
Definitely leaning towards a popped headgasket more now, as you look around the top end of the motot and top of bellhousing there is oil so I am thinking that the timing chain cover may inteed be fine but the headgasket is just leaking so badly that it is runnin down the fromt and rear of the motor.

Nice pics, and I would say you made pretty good time. Make sure you take your time, and now def. would be a very good time to do those headers!sigpic1994 Camaro Z28 83K M6, CAI, AFR 190cc, 11.6:1, Hooker headers, Hooker ORY, Mangnaflow exhaust, AI 230/238, 1.6 RR, B&M Short throw, Hays clutch, 4.10 gear.

Sounds like the oil leak you discribed is the intake manafold. they all tend to leak at the top of the block between the heads. there is no gasket just high temp. rtv to seal that.sigpic
