I had the trans performance button in my 25th anniversary TA, it acts like a shift kit on demand. I didnt notice any increase in max RPMs when it shifted but it would chirp the tires with out really even trying.

The Perform Shift button was only installed on `94-95 Auto equipped Formula And Trans Am's.(All Camaro's had the program full time)
It changes the line pressure and may also alter lockup on the torque convertor.
I know on my old `94 Formula it would spin the tires hard into 2nd gear even with the standard 2.73's.

If your goals are to push 400 HP you obviously will need tuning. And at that point you can alter transmission performance through the ECM effectively bypassing the Perform Button.
But until that time you may want to install the switch in the ash tray.

            Exactly!!!

The second gear start was on Firebirds, and did exactly what the name implies; you started out in second gear when the button was engaged. The idea was that it would offer a less torque for take off on those snowy/wet road conditions.

Someone also asked about traction control.........traction control was an option (code NW9) on only V8-automatics starting in 1994. It would later be offered on/with other trim levels and option choices. It differed from the second gear start because it worked in conjuction with the ABS, and applied pressure to the rear brakes when slippage was detected.

Here's a pic of the performance button..........

The perform button sounds correct. Harder (or in the manual firmer) shifts. 2nd gear start has been a curse to me during the summer months. Every so often, the trans will go into "suck" mode. The wife likes buttons pfffth! Anyway, I believe the 4l60E can handle 400 horses and there is a shift kit available for it (transgo. Roughly $100). If you're going to go that route, you'd be better off to upgrade the internals to accomodate also, such as the beefier sunshell (I know of a guy that sells one called "The Beast" for roughly $60) , kevlar bands and clutches and such.

I'd still like Larry's v6-v8 button, that would work whenever rush hour gets to me.

Ha...my perform button must be broke cuz everytime my gf hits it, she is dissapointed afterwards! j/k no my lt1 formula had it and like most other people said it lets the rpms get higher before it shifts and slams it into gear harder (makeshift shift kit). Actually i could chirp em into 2nd with a stock engine with that button.

sounds good like to get the info on all that i need for the trany rebuild. it is a automatic. i know i need to rebuild it it takes abit to go into gear when i first take off.. also what size torque converter should i get.. was thinking about 2500. to 3000. ??? and what would be a good kind to get. i know when i was drag racing coan.. was king.. but very pricey

I would not "just snip it off", I'm sure if you follow the wires there is a plug somewhere that can just be undone.
"shift kit" is the best way to think of it.

then would a shift kit improve the button??? or would it not be worth it to but a shift kit??

I have a couple friends who had real shift kits in there cars. Unless your racing I dont see the point. My opinion.
