Theyre a PITA to work on compared to everything else and bottom of the barrel on strength. That even goes for the 12 bolt.
Just to clarify, the 10 bolts in 3rd and 4th gens suck.

1st and 2nd gen 10 bolts are just fine, and were routinely put in 400 tq cars.

I blame it all on GM commonizing everything to a Chevy based platform in 82...it was all downhill from there...

I was more or less saying that chevy rear ends in general just arent as easy to setup as a Dana/mopar or ford.

We did a gear change in my cousins coronet in about an hour and it was setup perfect.... you could never do it on a chevy.

The only people having trouble with the 10 bolt are the drag racers with sticky tires.

Road racers pump out high hp levels and still use the 10 bolt. The ten bolt is very efficient compared to larger differentials. The ford 9" is beefy, but robs alot of power.

9 times out of 10, the 10bolt brakes at the starting line of a drag strip.. Which is why i dont mind my 2.0 60' times..

what? you pull the entire pig out from the front on those axles which means you can swap that entire peice out and not have to mess with gear lash. the chevy doesnt follow that design, you have to fiddle around with shims or just hope the one you had was close enough. The ford axle pinion gear also meets the ring gear at a different angle which is explains a lot of its strength advantage (but also why it robs some power)

not even sure what this is from, but this is the type of design on the pig i am referring to:

With an axle like that, people can have different gearsets for "the weekend" at the track because its not a big deal to change out and have some fun.
