Engine identification

ok, I have determined it is either an 2001+ lq4 or lq9 by the "317" stamped on the heads. How do I find out what it came out of though and whether it is an lq4 or lq9? Does anyone know a trick to getting the number off of the block by the bell housing without pulling the motor?

I tried taking a picture but all of my cameras are to large to reach underneath the cowl.
