i found some new bolts at my dads work that did the trick. I went all out on this. I used teflon tape on the threads, and in between the handle and the shifter to help it grip. I also ground the handle down so i could use regular bolts and put a socket on it, there is plenty of metal there so im not worried about strength. here's the before and afters:

before: (no lock nuts, allen head bolts)

    Hopefully this does the trick

I'm definately creating a new measurement system, to use in parallel with metric and standard - just to add to the confusion!!
