Driving your f-body during the winter??

My girlfriend has a LS1 2000 Trans am that is pretty much stock except the rear end. It has 3.73s with a Detroit Locker. It has summer performance tires on it and she drove it once to a shop last winter. She thinks now because she drove it and she couldn't go straight at all that she could never drive it during the winter. I told her if she gets winter tires she'll be fine. She drives like 50 miles a week. Anyways, so I was wondering if you guys could back me up here and tell her that it'd be okay if she got winter tires. She doesn't think tires will make a difference.

winter tires will be like night and day for sure. but it's still gonna be a pain in the ass in snow. but hey if she only drives like 50 miles a week she'll be fine. plus they usually have the roads plowed or salted by the time most people are out driving. Also it's not like we have snow all winter, it snows for a day like once a week and then hangs out, but the roads are cleared pretty fast. my vote is drive it. just make sure she washes it every once in a while to get the salt off.

im going to rock out my TA this winter, it is just a TA. now i would never drive one of my camaros in the winter and my cobalt has waaayyy too much power now to even attempt to drive it in the snow.

Snow tires make all the difference in the world! I switched to dedicated snow tires 8 or 9 years ago and have never looked back. All seasons suck in the snow even though they're SUPPOSED to work in snow. Summer only tires turn to plastic in the cold and are useless. I just got my snow tires in today for the Camaro and going to get them mounted up this week. I drove my 94 Bird in the snow with all seasons and it did OK but I never put any weight in the back either. I'll probably throw a few 40lb salt bags or some sand bags in the back and it'll be fine. I've never driven a posi or locker in the snow so I have no idea how much that'll effect driveability.

We used to do driving class's at Ford with mustangs fitted with Blizzacks. On pure ice (we could not walk on it) with stock tires the cars would not even move. With Blizzacks on pure ice the cars were very drivable and alot of fun. In snow its almost like driving in rain. They make a HUGE differance. You stillneed to watch your speed and be on your toes in snow/ice condition though. I perfer limited slips/lockers in the snow. Alot of people like open diffs better cause the car won't fishtail as much but I feel I have alot more control when both tires are spining even though the rear will want to wander. With some practice you can drive the car with the throttle
