  • HELP! Car shaking!

I went to pick up my sax from school yesterday, and I think I may have hit a speedbump in the parking lot a little too fast. Anyway, after this, I went home, and a little while later, I left for Jazz Band rehearsal. I'm cruising down Main st, and all of a sudden, the car starts shaking. It feels like it's the transmission thats shaking. Only thing is, it shifts fine, there's no visible damage to the tranny, and the shaking starts and stops on its own very randomly. I am afraid this may be a sign of impending doom, but I thought I should ask you guys before I take it to the dealership. Is this a common problem for the 4th gen, or did I just screw up my baby? Please respond quickly, because I have no choice but to continue driving the car.

hmm...too vague of a description. as my car has often made all kinds of vibrations and noises it shouldn't...usually before something stops working. if you hit a speed bump really fast. you may have knocked a wheel outta alignment?

is your stering wheel shaking too? or is it just your car. if your stering wheel is shaking also, you probibly messed up your alignment (sp?) make sure all of your lug nuts are tight too!!..... im serious!!!

That will teach you to speed in a school zone! I told you not to drive that thing in winter man now look.

I sure hope its just an alignment. It could be. It could have also given your tranny a nice whack. These cars and speed bumps do not go together. Let me know man. I'll take a ride with you and we can track it down. You were talking about a motor and tranny swap anyway right?

I'll be prayin for your car!

Some other things that I know make the wheel shake is something is going on with the caliper, it makes the steering wheel shake while you brake... i dunno just somethin to add.

The steering wheel does not shake, but the shifter does. It only happens when I hit a bump, whether it is a speedbump or pothole or anything. The steering wheel has always shook while braking, and I just learned to ignore it as the rotors are in great shape and there is still plenty of brake pads left. The transmission did not hit the speedbump when I went over it. The speedbump was only about 3-4 inches tall. There are some 6+" bumps in the senior parking lot where I park everyday, and I occasionally scrape the undercarriage driving over those, but I am always going less than 2mph (literally) over those. I hope that clarifies for you guys, and I hope to find out whats wrong this weekend.

I think there is a bracket that holds the transmission in place by the drive shaft and if this broke loose you could get a shake from the car when it is driving and the shake would probably increase or decrease depending on the speed the drive shaft is spinning.

But, I am not a mechanic and most of what I know I have read...

well, in my car, the time travel circuits are activated at 116 mph. That is why I am still here. . . Damn car only does 113! So, back to the topic at hand. . . How easy is it to get to this transmission mount? Are you sure that's whats wrong with it? I don't want to drag out the jack just to find out that there's a dead squirrel wrapped around the driveshaft ! I'm going out to try and fix it right now. Have to, because 4" of snow is in the forecast for tonight, and I ain't going out in that! Thanks for your help, and I'll post the results!

the snow is supposed to be nasty 4-6 inches in some areas. I would think it would be the transmission mount. if thats not connected snug...there is going to be some shaking.

and just so you know.......it's 88mph!!

In the movie it's 88 mph. In my Camaro, it's 116. I say 116 because I know that my time circuits are in working order, but they stopped making the flux capacitors like the movie in 1993. SOO, I'm stuck with no possible time travel capabilities until the V8 swap. lol ANYWAY, my dad says that he has never seen the transmission mount break on any car newer than late 80's. I think it is just a bolt loose, so I'm going to check it out as soon as the weather clears up again. He thinks that it is a U-Joint. I explained to him that I already checked that, and then he suggests that it is a loose wheel. I also checked that. Trying to get him to get up and look instead of sending me on a wild goose chase through my car. Trying to explain my opinion to him is like banging my head against the wall. It will only bruise my brain Well, thanks to all of you for your help, and please keep the suggestions coming. I will keep you posted.
