I have driven a few L78 Corvettes and have been impressed with how well they run.

But it might be shy of your 500 HP goal, headers would be beneficial as well.

Well the only reason I ask is I have a 396 for my 69 chevelle and I no you can make make this power or Atleast close to it I already have a. Lunati pro series crank for it its a .10 thousands destroke so I can run a longer rod that way it will rev even better people think I'm crazy but what the Hell I've considered a blower or turbo .but NA would be the best just wonderd what people were doing I've Googled it and not a lot of info . Worst case I use a 6.0 and make it Carbed.

Sometimes it is better and easier to sacrifice a little power to build a set up that was proven for performance, durability and drive ability. That is why I lean towards a stock rebuild, so when it it no running well it is easy to buy parts, and look up specs on how it should be timing, what size carb etc.

The 396s of that era usually have 10.25:1 or 11:1 compression which won't allow you run much boost unless your start buying special parts.

What do you want to do with the car?

Well I think outside the box and the prooven percormance is not good enuff. I want to push this thing past the norm like I said I have a lunati forged crank and I an going with bad ass rods and pistons so I can change compression to what ever I want so boost is an option but I perfere NA but mite go boost but I really just wonderd what other guys have done to make the power that I'm looking for not many people build these becouse its harder so they say to make this powerthat and they think bigger is better not true my firehawk with a long rod 355 lt1 has the same torqe and horse as a 383 or a 396 stroker and I can rev faster and higher than them. so I like small cube big power moters.

Head work and a compression bump. Will probably have to run a mixture of race and pump. Single Plane intake manifold and heads.

Well I have a lunati pro series crank its a ten thousenths de stroke and I plan on using a longer rod and. I haven't figured on NA or boost. So compression hasn't been disided on yet heads or cam I no how to make power I just wonderd what other guys are doing. To make big power with these engines.

well that clears up what I was getting at, too many people get it over there head start naming companies like they know what they are talking about.
You are on the wrong forum if you want opnion about a gen 1 big block. This forum is mostly 20 year old guys with 4th gen camaros. There is alot of knowledge on chevelles.com and similar forums about big blocks.

I have a good goal for you to try and reach. My 122 cubic inch cobalt motor makes 280 HP and 320 ft lbs 2.29 HP/CI and 2.62 ft lbs/CI.

Hahahaha yea I've talked to them guys in them forums they mostly say go big or go home hell with that. I do not no that much about them engines. I've heard. That there pretty easy to make power there is a few in town here that are pretty healthy I over heard a guy talking about his he had sum upgraded internals head work. And a bigger turbo. And a bunch of other stuff he was braging of 350 to the tire but hell like I said. I don't no them I no a honda guy that is building sum all forged 4 cylnder. With head work cams and his buddy builds custom turbos somewere in detroit he is building him one it should be a runner my other buddy is soon going to building beretta the one in my pic with a forged. 3500 big cam and a shit load of spray. With a 6 speed rite now its a 5 speed 3.1 with nitrious its ok but not enuff they would be better at talking about your cobalt my buddy beretta loves them cobalts he would probly talk your ear off

I've never built a 396. As far as the Cobalt the Ecotech is a good engine. I use to be in the Saturn Community and there was a guy with a LLO (1.9L Dohc) making 500 at the wheels. All it takes is a turbo. The Cobalt makes 260hp stock.

I've got to say that's pretty damn impressive. Yeah boost can do wonders for any engine my cusin has a impala ss with a 383 and a rear mount turbo I think its a 76 mm but his tune sucks and he is only at 9 pounds of boost. As soon as we find a good tuner it going up to 15 maybe more depends. Id be interested in seing one of them cobalts run .

Front Wheel Drive for the lose.

Rear mounts are a nice idea but they are far back. A turbo also uses heat to spool.
