No one knows for sure. I know there was a big outpouring for people wanting a "RS SS" and "Z28 SS" and all that type of stuff, but whether GM does it or not is another topic. When the Camaro first came out, there were a lot of rumors about it being LT, LS, LX or something like that from (pardon my lack of knowledge) the 70's? I think the response to that was too poor so they realized they need to do Z28, SS, RS.

I overheard scott settlemeire at the meet n greet, but i cant remember what exactly it was he said. I believe it was an SS vs Z28 discussion, and he said something like the lineup will be "historically" correct. meaning Z28 > SS
so i would assume base>RS>SS>Z28-Joel

The z28 wasent better neccesaraly (spelling) better that the SS. The z28 had the 302 (1st gen) but i belive the suspension was better than the SS.
But the ss was ether a 350 or 396 i forget.sigpic

a dual quad 302 vs a 375hp 396 SS was usually a drivers race. Z28s had the better suspension.Originally posted by lozanoa11 View PostThe z28 wasent better neccesaraly (spelling) better that the SS. The z28 had the 302 (1st gen) but i belive the suspension was better than the SS.

and also everyone seems to forget that in the 2nd gens, the Z28's LT1 was the best engine you could opt for, and it also came with the better suspension.-Joel

Ah, geez, we're really splitting hairs here 'cause they really changed things up after the 1st gens.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28 View Posta dual quad 302 vs a 375hp 396 SS was usually a drivers race. Z28s had the better suspension.
and also everyone seems to forget that in the 2nd gens, the Z28's LT1 was the best engine you could opt for, and it also came with the better suspension.
1st gen Z28s had to conform to the SCCA 5.0 liter max displacement. The dual quad crossram was available as a dealer option, but very rare and expensive even back then. But all suspensions could be ordered with any 1st gen. It's not unusual for an original crossram with the original carbs go for $30,000 by itself these days.
1st gen SSs really just opened up the option availability to practically anything (unless you knew how to order a COPO). An aluminum head L78 396 SS with JL8 brakes was the baddest 1st gen Camaro you could order without going COPO. Z28s would turn better just due to less mass up front. In a drag race, the 396 blows it's doors off.
2nd gen Z28s did not conform to the SCCA codes anymore, and could be ordered with a couple of 350s, including the LT1 (arguabley the baddest carbed small block of all time anywhere).
2nd gen SSs came in 350 or 396 options. It should be noted that starting 1969 the 396 actually displaced 402 cubic inches. Still available with aluminum heads in 1970, the 396/402 made 375 hp in max form, but in 71, the 396 only made 300 hp w/o aluminum heads. The Z28 LT1 made 330 however, so this is the crossover year for power comparison. The big block was gone after 72.
But to answer the original question...GM is holding the SS model as the top model for all of it's car lines...while it's not been announced, it's unlikely they're going to change that for the Camaro.
I'd guess that the Z28 would be the base V8 Camaro, and the SS is the up-level...just a guess.Originally posted by Redd8407I WANT NOISE! SPEED! That's precisely what I was thinking. They've been working to establish the SS nameplate as something special (i.e., dropping it from the Malibu and the rumors of the Corvette SS being the end all of 'Vettes), so I don't think they'll undermine that with the new Camaro.Originally posted by 81DaytonaPaceCar View PostBut to answer the original question...GM is holding the SS model as the top model for all of it's car lines...while it's not been announced, it's unlikely they're going to change that for the Camaro.
My uneducated guess?
Camaro: 3.6L LY7 V6
Camaro RS: 5.3L LS4 V8
Camaro SS: 6.2L LS9 V8
Also, don't forget the LS7. You know Lutz is just dying to cram that into the engine bay, so what would it be? A limited-run Z28? Rereleasing the ZL1?
