And GM isn't done downsizing yet...I know so many people that are just getting crushed by the entire auto industry tanking...this whole ordeal has been one of the saddest times of my life...

I remember somewhere in history, it's been talked about the big three plants had halted production of domestic vehicles in favor of building military vehicles. Considering that we are waging wars in two places right now, I'm sure vehicles are necessary. How feasible would it be to halt domestic production and use the plants that would otherwise close to build vehicles necessary to the military? This would keep these plants open, the workers employed and perhaps pull us (and GM) out of this downturn. Just a thought.

That's exactly what they did during World War II...and the reason why you'll never find a 1943 Chevy...

The problem is the government is already broke.

One thing I learned back in grade school (or at least they told me) is that war is supposed to be good for the economy. I think the problem came when the government started playing with money that just didn't exist. Like the old addage "chickens before they hatched". I had read somewhere that the Iraq war was costing somewhere in the area of 1 billion per day. That's insane, without any plan of recouperation.

But yeah, with the money spent, there's just not enough in order to invest. Very sad. What happened to the FDRs and Trumans, or at least someone with a clear and concise plan?

the bloodletting isn't over at the dealers yet either - they announced Friday they intend to kill and additional 500 dealers over and above the 1100 already contacted

also with them filing this morning they will likely be pulling the same crap that Chrysler did and kill all 1600 immediately (or within 30days) instead of waiting for October of 2010

WWII was a crazy time. Us Americans were building ships faster than any other nation in history, faster than they could be sank too. I don't think I would mind a shift into producing military vehicles as long as people could get jobs and they let me have a tank for my trouble. Can you all see it? A Red and Black camouflage Abrams tank!

I'm bringing this to the next M&G! :lol

"Nearly a dozen plants will be identified for closure by 2010, resulting in 20,000 job losses. Three more plants are set to be idled and put on stand by status in hopes for a rebound in sales that may never come.

GM will also shed its Pontiac, Saturn, Hummer and Saab brands and cut loose more than 2,000 of its 6,000 U.S. dealerships by next year. That could result in more than 100,000 additional job losses if those dealerships are forced to close."
