The ZR1 is the equivalent of the SS moniker, but it's still not "SS" just like the Z28 would be the equivalent but not.

And no arguing that the Corvette is hailed as the holiest of holies.

Nonetheless, I believe we should go back to the original topic of the vehicle's potential existence...

And I don't know how you can say that it "flies above the SS moniker"...the ZR1 IS it's SS moniker...
Who cares if ZR1 is the "corvette's SS badge," fact is, it doesn't say SS. It wears a Z badge because it is a holy of holies. The brand manager of Camaro himself obviously sees something "legendary" in the badge if he legitimately believed a 400hp Camaro didnt deserve the badge (see my signature). No Z28 has ever even had 400hp before.

No the Camaro "does not compare" but what does that matter? My opinion, but ANY car north of 500 horsepower has the right to a special badge.

Besides what are they going to do, call it an SS when the SS is already on the market? Its not 1969 anymore when an SS could have 6 different engines.

Z28, ZL1, "LS9" whatever... They either make the halo car or they dont. If they do, its not going to be an SS.

You should have been paying better attention to Car Trivia...

What is the RPO for the 1st gen Camaro SS?

                  Z27.

The RPO "Z" designation is always associated with a performance edition of a vehicle.

                  Z26 Beretta.

                  Z06/ZR1 Corvette.

                  Z24 Cavalier.

                  Z71 1500 series truck.

They could have just as easily put a Z27 badge on them instead of a SS badge.

But at the time back in the middle sixties when this was happening, ALL of GM's uplevel performance vehicles carried the SS moniker...Impala...Nova...El Camino...Chevelle...

And so at the time (just as it does now), it made perfect marketing sense to continue that practice and have the SS be the top mark.

It's the fact that only the Camaro got this goofy, obscure Z28 specialty RPO package that screwed everything up.

And then when GM dropped ALL of it's SS models for so many years (and Z28 was all that was left), people are now assuming that the Z28 is somehow better than an SS when that has never been the case.

Historically, if a SS model is offered, it is always the top dog.

Why would GM change that now?

They're trying to do for Cadillac what they've done with the Corvette.

Somehow make it "better" and more exclusive than the commoners who just wear a SS badge.

                    Corvettes get Z's.

                    Cadillacs get V's.

That's just the way it is.

Probably cause it fits in better with the marketing now.

Many people don't understand the history of Z28, let alone the term itself...

                          woa woa woa Jeff.

You were just talking about the opinion of "rest of society." How many people do you think are aware of trivia like that?

If my truck is top dog (in half tons), why isnt it an SS? Super Sport could apply to off-road the same way it applies to street/strip There have been equally worthless SS packages regardless of being top of the totem pole. In fact, there is a Silverado SS. Is it better than a Z71? that depends who you ask because they serve different purposes, just like with the 1st gen camaro.

People who assume the Z28 is better are assuming it because of the first gen, when both were available. No one thinks it is a superior badge because it was the only thing available at a time when the badge meant you had a whopping 185hp.

Arguing history is pointless though. Fact of the matter is GM wouldnt release a car with new specs and the same badge. ever. If they do it would be the same way mustangs do it. Mustang GT top dog?... no. GT500, yes. But I dont think GM is going to dispose of such a well known name-plate. Factually correct or not, people know and respect it.
