if that says anything to me, it says that GM decided that there is room for both nameplates in their lineup - which is a good thing. If GM had only done one, i wouldve expected it to be SS. Originally i dont think GM planned to bring both badges back. Hopefully they realize that Z28 and SS need to be differentiated, not just the stupid totem pole thereom that was developed with SLP on the 4th gens.Originally posted by 81DaytonaPaceCar View PostOK, you ready for this?
Just last week GM decided to have BOTH the SS and Z28 have badging on the steering wheels (originally just the SS was to have badging, indicating that it would be the top line model).
IMO the people that want the Z28 to be an ace-of-spades Terminator killer dont have their history straight either.
top line yes, top performer not really. again with the differentiation...Originally posted by 81DaytonaPaceCar View PostGenerally speaking, if there was an SS offered, it was the top line vehicle.

It did happen in about 93-96 I think. Basically when they were both LT1 cars and were very closely matched.Originally posted by 19Xtreme99 View Postchevy will never let anything even come close to touching the vette. that is their pride and joy. The camaro was never designed to compete with it. why would it be? they are the same company. the two cars serve two different purposes and always have. the vette is and will always be untouchable. I love those cars! I've been known to wet my pants just thinking about ZO6's. tmi? sorry.

Sorry, he's wrong.Originally posted by 94_LT1_Z28 View PostSomeone who I know talked to someone important from GM about the new Camaro today and I found out a couple key things about it. The information is as far as I know true because the person who told me the stuff works at an automotive testing place where some tests will be done on the Camaro in the future, and the person she talked to was sorta important. This is what I learned:- The Z28 WILL BE the top model
- BUT... it will cost around $70,000 supposedly

- The new Camaro will be out in January, not any earlier

Again, EVERYTHING is rumors right now because even the people that are working at GM don't know what one will be the top model. I can guarantee you they won't even know until a month before, if that. They can switch back and forth all they want until production starts and they start slapping badges on.
That said, I've heard SS will be the top of the line. Simply put, it goes with the rest of Chevrolet's vehicle lineup. SS is the "top dog" in everything else (minus Corvette). Which name is unique to the Camaro? Z28. Which package is going to sell more -- the base V8 or the top-of-the-line V8? Sorry, I know there's a lot of hardcore performance guys here, but the base v8 is going to outsell the high-perf v8. Hence, if they make Z28 the base v8, that means there will be more Z28's out there than SS, which means the name that the Camaro is known for would be "out there" in the public more than an SS. Marketing, folks, get the name the Camaro is known for out there with the public. They don't have to reintroduce an "SS" to the public because there's tons of other SS models out there in the lineup, but they do have to reintroduce a Z28 to the public.

Y'know, I think all of these off the wall rumors originally came from (I think) nastyZ28.com, when some numbskull posted trim levels, options, and pricing roughly a year ago.
He even had a "special" edition Z28 as the top model for somewhere around $70K, and a total of like 6 different models (anyone else remember this?).
It all looked legit and official, but just made zero sense from a model line perspective or package perspective.
Might be the single largest piece of mis-information out there right now, and everyone is taking it as gospel.
My guess (I said GUESS), is that GM is upping the interior content of the Z28 and it will go directly against the Challenger R/T at the same price point (the Challenger interior is pretty bland by comparison)...i.e. mid-30s
And the SS with go directly against the SRT8...might be a bit more expensive if the supercharged motor does make production...i.e. high-40s to mid-50s with the SC motor.
I'd also guess that the SS will be limited production, and none of them in the first 2 years go for sticker.
As a side note, the 2011 LX refresh packages are being awarded right now, and the LC (Challenger) is not part of it, nor is it being forecast as future business. It appears that the Challenger will be a 5 year program, and that's it.Originally posted by Redd8407I WANT NOISE! SPEED! AN ENGINE THAT SHAKES MY INTERNAL ORGANS LIKE THEY GOT PARKINSON'S! so you what you know isnt a rumor?Originally posted by meissen View PostSorry, he's wrong.
The top model arguements are bs because they never even have a specific direction. I am always arguing that the packages are supposed to be differentiated, not one above the other... but the person Im arguing with cant think outside of the totem-pole thereom. (The only time SS was ever 100%, undebatably above the Z28 was with the 4th gens... a CAI and catback package). Im sure ill be disappointed in that sense, because its not 1969 anymore and consumers wont understand a lineup that doesnt work like a totem pole, its too complicated to work in the over simpled market today.Originally posted by meissen View PostAgain, EVERYTHING is rumors right now because even the people that are working at GM don't know what one will be the top model. Unless you heard it straight from Scott, or anybody else important, that is just as irrelevant as anything anyone else posts here.Originally posted by meissen View PostThat said, I've heard SS will be the top of the line.
Everything else in Chevrolet's lineup is not of sports car origin.Originally posted by meissen View PostSimply put, it goes with the rest of Chevrolet's vehicle lineup.
- Cobalt? economy car
- Malibu? bigger economy car
- Impala? Full size sedan
- Monte Carlo? grocery getter for grandma, even the SS badge means nothing
- Trail Blazer? Furthest thing from a sports car
- Silverado? Ditto above
Corvette is the only other sports car in GMs lineupOriginally posted by meissen View PostSS is the "top dog" in everything else (minus Corvette). Which name is unique to the Camaro? Z28. Which package is going to sell more -- the base V8 or the top-of-the-line V8?
Which name is unique to the Corvette? Z51, Z06, and ZR1 (thats 3 Z-packages, and 2 Z-badges).
Which package sells more with the vette? Its not the Z06, or the ZR1.
Remember the public outcry that occurred when Chevrolet announced the Blue Devil as the Corvette SS? It didnt happen. There is definitely a similar outcry occurring with the Z28, its just not as likely to prevail. The people behind it usually dont know their facts, and usually just want whichever car they own to be top dog. (call me a hypocrite i dont care, my dream car is a 69 Z28... NOT an SS).
Funny thing is I am defending the possibility of Z28 being top model when that is not what i think it should be. It will probably be SS all because of an aftermarket intake and catback package started in the 90s, the most irrelevant difference EVER in camaro's history.

you should do some reading the 5th gen forum on camaroz28.com then. They basically burn anyone who wants SS top model at the stake. but yet, out of autoblog, camaro5, gminsidenews, etc etc, theyre usually the ones with the 5th gen news first.
