  • Jeep restoration

Not sure if I ever posted about this or not, but last fall and through this winter (until I started working on the camaro) Ive been bringing my grandpas (who past away just about a year ago) 1978 Jeep CJ-7 back to life. It was quite a chore really, its been sitting out side next to the barn for the last 6 years since they sold the cabin and brought it home(even then it wasnt running right so it was trailered home from alpeana).

First thing was replacing the battery, then the fuel pump(old mechanical style), then the gas tank and fuel filter. Followed by tires, brakes, wheel lugs/locks, changed the oil, p/s fluid, and coolant, and replacing all exterior lights and fixtures.

Then I noticed a little hole in the frame, and went at it with a hammer, and nearly tore the whole back half of the passenger side frame apart. This was kind of devistating, but the local shop cut us a REALLY good deal cutting the frame apart and rebuilding that whole section and undercoating the whole thing. We were back on track! Most people wouldnt have fixed the frame, they would have junked it, but my grandparents bought it new in 78, and my grandpa drove it everyday to work at the plant. It has more sentimental value than most could comprehend.

Then came paint, we matched this paint as close as possible to the color my grandpa repainted it about 18 years ago, it was origionaly green but, he picked the color blue, so thats what we went with.

Really the only things left on my list are to repaint the hardtop (cant do till I get the camaro out of the garage or until it warms up), and take the wheels off and get them blasted so I can repaint them.

Heres a website I made for a project at school it has most of the info for the thing on it, and alot of pictures, but I went and shot a few more the other day when I was out back playing a 18ish inches of snow!

And yes, 304 + 3 speed = Horrible gas mileage.

Was kinda board in my VB class, so just thought I'd share....

Nice looking CJ7! My dad had a dark blue CJ7 with a 360 V8 and a 4 speed, but it was pretty much gone when he sent it off to the junkyard. . .

Makes me really want a CJ now. . . Do you have pictures of the interior that you can post up?

Very nice, Spencer!! I know how that sentimental stuff works, my 1976 Chevy C10 was bought by my great-grandpa new too. I've probably spent way more on it than it's worth, but hey when I reach out to adjust the mirror it's cool to know that it's the same mirror my great-grandpa adjusted.

CJ's are very fun vehicles!!! I've got an 1985 that my dad bought back in December 1985. That would have made me 6 years old when he got it.

I've done a motor swap, 2" lift, tires, cage, and I've had a whole lot of fun with it. You now have a project for the rest of your life. Enjoy it!

Looks real good. I undersatnd about wanting to keep it. I went through the same type of thing when my brother died. I kept his BMW and rebuilt it all up real nice. Then after a few years had to sell it because I needed the money to pay off dept. I know who has it and I'm working on saving the money to buy it back. Just keep it in the family for as long as you can. And remember Grandpa is watching and is real happy with what you've done with it.

Awesome! I love the old jeeps! My grandpa has an old Willy's jeep at our cabin. I love driving it to get firewood and stuff. Kinda gives me a nostalgic feeling!

Thanks for all the complements guys! Ill see about getting some more interior shots tomorrow, but no promises as its way in the barn out back. But there are a few on my flickr.

The interior is 100% original minus the cb radio and speakers, has the original tan vynl seats with the 70/30 bench were the passenger side kinda flips/folds forward, which I guess is really rare in these jeeps.

Here are a few shots from my flickr.
These were shot the very first night i started messing with it, pitch black out with my BB.

Check out my flickr here, and just browse through for jeep ones, ive added a pic of what it looked like when i started to the origional post.
