  • Tire question

Tina needs new tires for her 99Z; she has 18" ZO6 rims and the current tire size is 275-35-18. I've looked on TireRack and these 5 looked like the best bang for the buck and the reviews were pretty positive for all 5:

    Kumho Ecsta MX $185
    Kumho Ecsta ASX $159
    Kumho Ecsta SPT $163
    BFG G-Force Sport $163
    BFG G-Force TA KDW2 $199

I currently have Firestone Firehawks on my 97SS and love them but they aren't offered at the 18" size that she needs.

    Opinions? Thanks in advance.....

Lots of people run Kumhos. I don't trust them and wanted something a bit better. I was going to go with the GForce Sports but found an awesome buy on my Toyos(which I had heard great things about). I've had the BFG KDWS on my Xtreme and liked them. Not sure how the KDW2's are but they do have that cool tread pattern. James has the new model Toyos on his car. See where he got them from and what he paid.

          Keego,

Is the $40 difference per tire between the Kumho's and BFG's really worth it?

The tires on it now are Kumho Supras....

Thanks alot for the feedback guys....

The Kumho's are a nice tire for the money...I had them on my old IROC wheels. Got all 4 tires for under $300 but they don't make that model tire anymore.

I have the new Toyo T1R on my 18's and love them. They grip really well for such a short sidewall. I got mine from http://www.edgeracing.com/cmdtoyo?gc...FRlmWAodgiJ7UQ
I bought them right when they were released and they had a promotion on spring sale....cost me like $1000 shipped to my door. They are 245/40/18 front and 295/35/10 rears.

Kumho makes great tires .......... if you buy the good ones. The Supra Kumhos are not a very inpressive tire IMO, But The MX's are quite awesome. I runs a set of 18" Kumo MXs on my car and love them. We recently put the BFGoodrich Sport tires on my wife's SS in 18" and they are quite impressive too. I would consider running them if they made a 295/35/18 tire but they don't.

The Kumho MX tire is an all out dry traction tire (with good wet traction too) that will out handle and grip any of the others listed. but they are very firm riding in 18" sizes, which is good for handeling. The BFG Sports are a notch lower on the handeling/traction scale in line with the BFG KDW's and will last longer than the Kumho MX, they also ride smoother as the sidewalls are not as stiff.

BFG makes great tires and wouldn't hesitate to run them, but the MX has a tread/compound more closely to the BFG KD tires which is their ultimate dry traction tire. The rubber really heats up as you drive, so much so that rocks will stick to the tire on a hot summer day. They grip like glue rolling down the road and while cornering but are not a drag tire. They do not hook up great on a hard launch as the sidewalls are very stiff. Just can't have your cake and eat it too I guess.

One other thing, the BFG KDW2 get real loud rolling down the road after they have worn down a bit so better have a loud exhaust with those tires or they may drive you nuts down the road.

                  Greg

the three best street tires are the s03 pole position, the pilot sport ps2, and the eagle f1 gs-d3. they are all $300+ tires, but right now tirerack currently has a sale on the gs-d3 for only $197 each. ive had them myself and highly recommend them.

                          thanks Greg!

00firebird replied that the Eagle F1 gs-d3's are on sale for 197 each at the tire rack; normally 255 each; that's over a 200 dollar savings for the set! Shoulld Tina go with the gs-d3"s???

You're on crack! I have the T1S Proxies which are the old model and I have done SEVERAL burnouts on the street and track and you can't even tell they're worn! I just wish they had a slightly stiffer sidewall. They grip way better than the stock Goodyear F1's did and they're slightly wider even though they're still 275's.

well I've never been a fan of Goodyear tires but the reviews on the tirerack are very positive; their only $12 more apiece then the Kumho MX's and are probably a far superior tire. Choices, choices, choices....
