  • Street Tires for a 2002 V6 Vert

My daily driver is a 2002 Camaro vert that I picked up back in February out of Virginia. It has a decent set of Goodyear Eagle GT's that show some uneven wear from bad alignment, but have more than a few thousand miles left on them. The current tires are 235/55-16 on the original factory chromed aluminum wheels.

My biggest problem with these tires is how bad they are in the wet. They don't feel like they have much grip at all in the rain, and I worry about hydroplaning on the freeway. I'm wondering if it's the poor wear pattern on these particular tires and maybe their age, because I used to drive a 1985 IROC-Z year-round in Michigan on the Goodyear Eagle VR Gatorbacks, and never had wet traction problems. (Snow, however, was a b****!)

Costco only stocks a BFGoodrich Traction T/A in my size, and Tire Rack doesn't have all that much more. Although the T/A seems like a decent tire, it doesn't give me a warm 'n fuzzy feeling. I'm used to putting the biggest stock tire I can on my cars, and I understand that my wheels are the same size as the Z28 wheels. If I look at 245/50-16 tires at Tire Rack, I get a lot more choices, including the highly-rated Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus and General Altimax HP.

What do you guys think? For a V6 Woodward cruiser that spends most of its time carting me to and from work (11 miles one way) with occasional weekend freeway trips, should I stick with the base rubber, or should I treat the car to Z28 size meats? Would the bigger, more expensive tires give me the wet 'n snow traction I want, or would the factory tire serve just as well?

I used BFG sport all-season tires through the past two winters and they did an excellent job. I don't think my car is going to see snow anymore but if i did need another set of all seasons i would buy them again in a heartbeat.

They are a little expensive but i think that they are worth every penny and my set actually lasted 55,000 miles.

I run the Khumo Ecsta AST on mine 245/55-16 and have to say this is the smoothest, most gripping tire I've run so far. Holds in the rain very well and has DEEP rain channels (2 of them). When the car's on the rack, you can see daylight through the both of them. Only down side, these will never see winter, so in that case, I can't help.

I've got Khumo Ecsta ASX tires - "Ultra High Performance All-Season" and I drove mine through the winter DEEP snow many times with no difficulties.

          They're about $220 on Tirerack.com

              Hey Kevin,
Its Brian from Masterworks, I glad you finally found the site.

It sounds like you have too many options... in my opion.
If you want a taller tires and better in the snow(narrow), I would suggest a 225/60/16. Its a popular passenger car size tire. But handling, and dry traction will suffer.

I had snow tires on my camaro yet I still carried a 10ft tow strap and some other supplies just in case. The most important one being a cell phone. Usually if your prepared... you will not use anything.

Hey Brian! Thanks for the info! I got the optional size information off of the Tire Rack site, and from other Camaro/Firebird folk.

Since I'm more concerned about traction and stability in the wet than I am about snow, I'm leaning towards a Z28-sized tire to go on my factory rims. Right now, the two leading contenders are the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus and the BFGoodrich g-Force Super Sport A/S.

I have the same tires and love them. I am a fan of narrow tires.

Michelin and BFGoodrich are the same company. I believe Michelin owns BF Goodrich. However it seems Michelin tires are superious hence more $$$$(usually).

when i had to drive my old firebird v6 in the winter i had hankook zovaks winter tires on stock camaro rims. I can't remember the size though they were definately narrow. They were incredible. i never even got close to stuck with 100 lbs of salt in the ttop well. I would sell them to you but some jerk stole them from our barn one day. They only had one frickin winter on them (driven sparingly that winter as well)
