Hope all turns out well for you Joel! You really need to try this stripper Tom has. His aunt stole it from her work. They use it to strip airplanes in the Air Force. Spray it on, wait 30 min, and its bare metal. He stripped the frame of a 1980's YZ80 with like 8 layers of paint (no joke) and it was straight to the metal in one shot.

This is stuff the Air Force actually uses. As soon as i sprayed it on the frame of the 80 the paint it started to bubble (and kept bubbling) like boiling water. I'd give you the rest of the can if you weren't so balls deep in the project already and the next time I'll be home is like a month from now.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28 View Postwhat kind is it? the stuff i just used is "supposed" to be aircraft grade
I'd tell you what is is but the label on the can acutally has a USAF logo on it so I know there is no way you could buy it.2005 Yamaha R6

The active ingredient in the Military Grade paint strippers is Alkaline Benzyl Alcohol. They switched over to Alkaline Benzyl Alcohol because the old chemical, the active ingredient of which was Methylene Chloride, released what they refer to now as "HAP's", or Hazardous Air Pollutants, and the new chemical does not. The old chemical was very effective, but it was too harmful to the environment. The Alkaline Benzyl Alcohol Solution is also very good, without the polluting effects. I would assume that the new stuff will also have fewer side effects on the human body, such as light-headedness, drowsiness, feelings of euphoria, etc. Making this assumption, I can also assume that it's safe to say that the old Methylene Chloride solution DOES cause these side effects, thus increasing Joel's feelings of Euphoria.
Use the old stuff, you can get it from a military base. Do you have any connections? If you don't, I'll see what I can do for you. . .

One more quick question. . .
Do you have a heat gun? Heat will generally help loosen the paint's adhesion to the metal. . .Nick H.

Don't use muratic acid. It will oxidize/stain, etch, and otherwise ruin your polished finish.
I still think you should just bite the bullet and get them blasted, powder coated, polished and sealed.

DO NOT SANDBLAST the wheels !!!!!!!!!!!!!! It will ruin the surface of the wheels and make them nearly impossible to polish out.
Don't ask me how I know that.
