It's really a fine line between them all. Aluminum allows better heat dissipation which allows a bit more timing, but the true L98 heads aren't that great when it comes to flow. Vortec's flow well for what they are, but being iron they are heavy and limit max potential.

There was a Michigan based company that was selling Pro-Comp aluminum heads for a great price on ebay, they took bare castings and built/spec'd everything for around $630.

FWIW, I have just over 1100 into my TPI specific Edelbrock heads (60859) and I wish I went with a used or rebuilt set. I paid $400 for bare heads and it added up quickly, but they flow 230+ intake and 170+ exhaust.

      1989 Camaro IROC-Z Convertible - 355 big tube TPI, WC T5, 3.42 Zexel Torsen, CTS-V/C4 brakes
      1955 Bel Air 2 Door Post - 357 TPI, Muncie M20, 4 wheel disc

Find used stuff, unless you're planning to run from the cops often . It's fun to do custom stuff to bare/used things. Usually you can find shops or a person to do them cheap and well. Pros and cons to everything, that's why there are heads everywhere!
