  • [Project] Suspension Project

Here's some upgrades I've been working on.

Had a bad bearing on the passenger side. Decided since I had the rear of the car apart to do some suspension upgrades.

Founders Performance: Lower Control Arms, relocation brackets, adjustable pan hard bar and strut tower brace
BMR: Lowering springs for both front and rear
    KYB: Struts
    Moser Axles

Needed to pull the axles to get to the bearings and inspect.

Bad bearing had caused scoring on the axles.

Decided to install new shocks and struts to lower it down. (BMR Springs and Founders LCA Relocation Brackets)

Installed the new bearings, axles, LCA's, and Adj. PHB on the rear end.

Front end sway bar links were bad along with the stock coil overs.

Upper control arms on the passenger side had rusted all the way through. I could take chunks of the out once I tore them off. Picked up a new to me used upper control arm and mount. The struts were obviously rusted to the mount. So new mounts as well!

These will receive a fresh coat of primer and paint to help prevent rusting.

Since the rest of the rusted parts just came in today, once I get it all painted and assembled I'll update how it all looks lowered.

Very nice! I just did a lot of the same work to mine. Hope you like a firm ride, because it will be Also the rust on the top of the spring mount is pretty typical.

Very good choices. Are you going to change the ball joints or control arm bushings? I'm working on mine right now, you may have trouble getting the bushings out. It could be more trouble than it's worth hah... good job so far though.
What's your opinion on the strut tower brace does it do anything?

I figured the rust would be pretty bad. It's an Indiana car so it's seen snow. I'm hoping it drives like it is on rails after I am done. The stock suspension was pretty well shot! I'd like to get it to the point I can do some autocross some day. But right now it's just for fun!

The STB did give it immediate improvement when on some curvy roads and taking corners sharp. The total suspension was pretty well done, so any improvement was good! I am replacing the ball joints, bushings and body dampener on the mounting bracket of the upper control arms. They all were pretty well shot and the ball joint was destroyed when I separated them from the spindle.

                  Looks great!

I've been putting off suspension upgrades for too long. I figure when I tear it apart I'll pretty much upgrade/replace everything. Looking at probably doing some autocross before and after suspension so I can see the difference.

Took it for a short spin around the block. Seems much more planted to the ground! Me likey, well worth the investment and time!

Lifted the car with a 10 ton fork lift on the the jack stands, then compressed the suspension and welded in the SFC's this weekend. What a HUGE improvement. Everything is now tight and tied in very well with the suspension upgrades. Now I just need to work on rollin the rear fenders for clearance in dips in the road at high speeds and replaced the bump stops.

My father-in-law works at a military garage repairing vehicles like the one in front of my car. What I should have taken a picture of was the car on the forks of the fork lift.
