  • [Project] 1992 Camaro- Road Racing on a budget

This past summer I took my Tuner to Waterford Hills and I had I had a blast! Since then I have been tossing around the idea of buying a dedicated track car for autoX events and other road courses. I established a budget and I started to investigate some different platforms that are popular in road racing. I was able to narrow it down to Mazda Miata or a 3rd gen camaro. I think the miata is better choice but I am familiar with F-bodies and my goal is have FUN building the car and racing it, not to be the quickest.

In the past two weeks I looked at a few turd gens but today I pulled the trigger on a 1992 RS, 305 automatic. The owner said it won't go into 3rd gear but for $550 I couldn't pass it up. The body is solid however the previous owner drove by braille. Luckily I have some body panels from a 92 I just parted out. This project will include weight reduction, transmission repair, suspension modifications, brake cooling, body work, and paint.

Once my brother and I unloaded the car we didn't waste any time stripping the car. It is now a couple hundred pounds lighter.
The following items have been deleted- spare tire, jack, rear seat belts, rear seats, carpet, head liner, rear speakers, radio, and interior panels behind doors.

It doesn't look all that bad! Plus you got all those free french fries with it. Looks like a good starting point, especially for $550. What a deal!! Does the motor run?

The purchase price is now $.64 less after finding some gross change under the seats.
I will let the picture below answer that question

No, this one runs and is complete. The other was obviously a roller.

Looks like a good time will be had! Can't wait to lend a hand and learn some things!

I was searching for a 82-84 hardtop without ground effects but I found this one as I couldn't pass it up. But good memory! it is the same year and color of the roller I had.

Stop by after work one day, I hope to have another 100 lbs removed by the end of the week.

Yeah AC and smog will help you get that extra 100 pounds out of it.

Fun project! Are you keeping the automatic in it?

If you're keeping the stock front a-arms, I have a new set of Global West delrin bushing that I have yet to use (and probably won't) if you're interested.

Thanks, Yes it will stay an automatic. I am considering have it rebuilt with a manual valve body.

Good suggestion! Last night I was looking at different cages that are offered. I need to investigate rules and determine a budget.
I would like to get some base line seat time, and make upgrades along the way so you can notice which ones had the most benefit.

I might pull my Spohn a arms and go back to stock

Why's that? Do you still have your stock lower A-arms?

Here are some better pictures. This afternoon I removed the rear bumper, washer fluid bottle, and aftermarket horns. I should have a different rear bumper installed by Wednesday.
