  • [Project] $800 Cavalier

My girlfriend just bought this '98 Cavalier sedan as her new DD. She wrecked her '07 Cobalt in January, and I've been commuting both of us to work and school, which isn't inconvenient or anything, but with her going a term at school longer than me, and my need to go to work during the next school term to continue my thesis means she'll need her own car. We were thinking of finding one in mid-October, but started looking early and found this one, which she named Olive. Beats working on the car in the winter!

I know it's not as exciting as a Fbody, don't need to tell me that. This is just a good place to log what has been done on the car.

    So, here's the details.

1998 Chevrolet Cavalier 4-Door, Base trim level
Manta Green exterior paint, Graphite interior color scheme
2200 115HP Inline-4 with the 3T40 3 speed automatic. Real speed demon with its large power output and 3:18 final drive.
    214,260 miles
    Manual Windows
    Power Locks (inside)
    Air Conditioning
    Brakes
    Tires

The issues (something generally an $800 is full of):

Third cylinder misfire code (audible and felt easily)
    Rear O2 Code
    Evap Code
A/C only works when it's cool out
Broken glovebox latch - two owners ago used about half a roll of duct tape to keep it closed. Previous owner removed duct tape and used mechanics wire as a twist tie.
Needs front tires - virtually slicks at this point.
    Trunk release doesn't work
Rear seat fold down release is missing (access achieved via manually pulling the latch inside the hole)
Rust on doors - especially drivers door which has a large rust hole
    Filthy, used interior
Previous owner smoked - smells like a chimney
    Light switch doesn't really work
Exhaust leak up front - and a lack of muffler out back
Passenger front door handle is funky - need to pull on the lock and handle at the same time to open

A lot of little things, mainly - but to be expected for a car with this high of mileage, and for this price.

    The good:

The underbody has virtually ZERO rust. I was amazed.
    New [non-matching] rear tires
    New tie-rods
    Good windshield and glass
Headlights work well (not foggy or hazy)
Shocks and struts appear to be in decent shape, goes around a turn great
Runs and drives fine, even with the misfire
    New alternator
    New belt

So yeah - it's definitely a project, but it should be fun.

Some pictures from the night we brought it home.

Brought the car outside to give it a good wash and wax, since it was quite dirty.

The body isn't in perfect shape, obviously, and neither is the paint - but it made a nice difference.

Interior photos (the camera really didn't seem interested in taking good shots at this point, so please excuse the poor image quality). Dirty ass carpet, seats, etc.

The area where the dumbass used all the duct tape is immediately visible. And the more intelligent quick fix is also visible.

The steering wheel cover actually came with my Camaro, and came in handy here (part of the steering wheel foam was missing)

Engine bay really isn't too dirty! Shiny new alternator and nice new belt.

Got some pre-interior removal vacuuming in. Looks a bit better.

Also hit the duct tape area with some soapy water and a scotch-brite sponge. Still present but helped in some areas.

Cleaned up a tiny bit in the engine bay, looks better in person than in pictures

Went to Uproar at DTE, got soaked, and thus did no work on the car

Got some Tuff Stuff and simple green for cleaning the interior, a can of brake cleaner for engine bay, and a can of seafoam that's gonna make this thing look like its on fire (and show me where the exhaust leak is )

Also received in the mail a new set of spark plug wires, and a new trunk release.

While the neighborhood had their annual garage sale where the idea is to clear things out of your garage, we did the opposite - instead placing half of a car inside of it.

Seats are gone, console is next. Carpet is filthy as shit as you can see

Area under the rear seats, found a ring, an earring, the old tie rod, and change under here!

I'm pretty sure that's pizza crust - previous owner worked at a pizzeria.
          IMG_0593.jpg

This area was absolutely ****ing disgusting. It felt wet and sticky, and just overall gross as shit.
          IMG_0594.jpg

Carpet removed - look at how CLEAN that floorpan is!!!

All the interior out of the car, in the garage.
          IMG_0602.jpg

The carpet, as it was, out of the vehicle. Absolutely disgusting.
          IMG_0597.jpg

After some cleaning work on the passenger side. Difference is noticeable. But it ain't done.

          Trunk carpet
          IMG_0605.jpg
          IMG_0607.jpg

Carpet after it's mostly cleaned. I had the ice packs there to try and harden the stick shit to get it off - it ended up wetting the area down, which helped.

It allowed me to spoon out the brown liquidy shit stuck into the carpet...seemed chocolate pudding.
          IMG_0606.jpg

Seats, cleaned as best as we could get em. Just 214k miles of wear and tear and dirt. Still, better than before.

Put the rear seat carpet mat back in, after wiping the floor down a bit, and vacuuming up all the loose crap.

For as crappy reputation as these cars got, they actually did their job damn well.

                Id love a Z24 Convert 5 speed.

                    9-9-12

After writing my 3600 word paper in six hours (class I was allowed to take an incomplete in to finish my essay at a later date due to all the stuff with my dad), I continued reassembling the interior.

Note, most of the later pictures were taken in the evening, so the camera used the flash, which shows a lot of the wear in the carpet and surfaces. It looks a whole lot better in person!

Carpet was put in the previous night, but got no pictures, since it was pitch black out. Looks a million and one times better!

                    IMG_0614.jpg
                    IMG_0616.jpg

                    Center console put back in
                    IMG_0617.jpg

As you see the Goo Gone sitting there on the floor - it was used on the duct tape area. Man did it make short work of that! Also shows off the new (used) glovebox latch I put in the previous day.
                    IMG_0618.jpg

                    Rear seat reinstalled
                    IMG_0619.jpg
                    IMG_0620.jpg

                    Front seats reinstalled
                    IMG_0621.jpg
                    IMG_0622.jpg

The interior isn't perfect - but it's a much nicer place to be, that's for certain. A lot of the smell came out, but some still remains. But it honestly could be the carpet cleaner, too. Have a tupperware of coffee grounds sitting in there attempting to absorb some of it. Might just be better to air it out again.

                      9-10-12

To start working on the misfire, I had tried switching around plug wires the day after we picked the car up, and only ended up with a multiple cylinder misfire code and a car that ran even worse. (I think the one wire wasn't connected well since it was completely taut). Switched it back and it still missed a little, but wouldn't give me the misfire code, the O2 code or the Evap code after I had cleared...

Anyhow, I bought a set of Bosch Platinum Plus plugs (stockers are platinum) for $2.45 a piece on Rock Auto - with a rebate for $3 a plug back , as well as the set of Delco plug wires seen earlier.

When I backed the car out before swapping the stuff, it wasn't very tempted to start, had to turn it over a few times and give it gas before it finally roared (I say roared because it's loud as hell with the lack of muffler and exhaust leak ) to life. After installation of the plugs and wires, as soon as the key was turned, the car immediately started. Seemed to run a lot smoother too. Could still feel a slight hesitation though, but seafoam may help that. Still plan to check the coils in the near future though.

                      Old vs. New
                      IMG_0625.jpg

The inside connectors of the old boots looked really worn
                      IMG_0628.jpg

Old vs. New. The old plugs weren't really anything bad, but changing em was cheap insurance.
                      IMG_0629.jpg

Everything installed. Hard to tell because my dirty hands made the new wires dirty.
                      IMG_0631.jpg

Also, bought a new (used again ) light/turn signal stalk. On the current one, the light switch didn't click anymore and wouldn't turn the low beams on. It also looked like shit.
                      IMG_0634.jpg

"New" one installed. Functionality is again restored!

Reminds me of my 05 Malibu. . . My car has served double duty as DD and parts pickup vehicle while working on my other car. Drivers seat needs some serious attention due to driving it with greasy dirty nasty clothes on, carpet needs cleaned, surfaces need scrubbed and detailed. Basically, it looks as bad as Kyle's Cavalier did in the "before" pictures, but would be spotless if I cleaned it out.

This thread is motivating me. . . I think I may get some work done tonight after I get home.

That's real clean. My big thing with this one is getting the door rust taken care of. Her car is going to have black spots everywhere from the rust converter soon . Touchup paint in rattle-can is like $30 a can...
