  • [Project] 1979 Dirty T/A-

A few details on the car-

'79 Pontiac T/A. T-tops. No motor, trans, master cylinder, radiator, tires and bad break lines. A little rot, here and there, but pretty solid where it counts, from what i have seen so far. It is going to be a project that I am sure wont be done anytime soon, but I am sure I will enjoy it the entire time.

    Plans-

First thing I need to do is get the body parts all back on the body, as some of the fender flares, fin, headlights, shaker ect. are in the trunk, so they dont get stolen. The car has sat in a city parking lot for almost 2 years.
Need to get the interior all put back together also. The door skins are off, along with the center console.
Then it will need a good cleaning, inside and out.
Next will be the body work it needs. The passenger side front fender is pretty beat up, but think I have a replacement lined up. The drivers door has a good hole in it, filled with bondo that has cracked. A few spots of rust, some worse than others that need some attention.
And then I can sand it all down for a coat of primer.
Gotta get all this done before my wife gets to see it......she wouldnt see past the mess its in, currently, like I do.

Still unsure what I am going to do about an engine/trans on the car.....I could use some advice on my choices. I am leaning towords either a 400 or a Chevy 350, but right now, I am not too picky. I will probly grab whatever I can find thats cheap to put in, to get the car rolling, for the time being. There is plenty of time to find the right engine for it, on down the line.

So far, from what I have seen of the forum- this is a pretty cool community of enthusiasts. I am looking forward to learning a whole lot here. Hope you guys/gals are ready for many, many questions.....because I will be asking them. I dont know a whole lot about these cars....yet. I am looking forward to seeing that change.

I guess the trunk and the engine bay is the only place I can find original paint on the car, even when sanded down to bare metal....

In the trunk, the passenger side isnt too bad-

But the driver side is pretty bad......

The rest of the body is black spray paint, with yellow (possibly primer?) underneath and bare metal below that-

The dash is pretty nice with the exception of 1 crack, near the center-

Looks like the interior has been spray painted also....was tan originally. The interior is going to take some serious elbow grease.....havn't taken the covers off the seats yet.

The engine bay, hood and entire front end of the car seem to be in great shape!

And some info I was able to clean up from under the layer of dirt/dust buildup that has settled over the last 2 years of it sitting....

                  So far, I have found-

                  Originaly had the 403 w/ 4 barrel
                  made in Norwood Ohio
built in the first week of May
Originaly had camel cloth interior, but was spray painted
                  Original color was Heritage Brown
                  Stock T-tops
And it was # 75,721 off the assembly line.
                  2:41 Locking rear end

Got the engine bay, trunk, interior and windows all cleaned up today.

The interior is missing alot of pieces....

The back seat isnt as bad as I thought it was going to be-

The backseat isnt as bad as I first thought though-

And found a cool little piece of nostalgia, on the dash-

Found out the car has cruise control and tilt steering today.

Got around 30% of the body sanded. Hope to have it primered up nice very soon.

Should be getting matching stock rally rims in the next couple days also.

Found out the guy I got the car from does not have the fender flares- but I will trade my father in law my tilt steering for his extra set.

                      Slowely but surely......

Been busy.....unfortunatly, not busy working on this car.

The past few weeks, everytime I get a good day to do some work, I get called in on the job. I hope to get the sanding done this weekend. Maybe get some of the body work started??

Got good news and bad news-

The bad- The transmission I had lined up to buy was stolen.....so now I need to find another one. Too bad too. The one that got stolen was a good trans and was cheap.

The good- The exhaust, from the headers back, w/ mufflers (original california turbos) w/o tail pipes did not get stolen. Picked them up a couple days ago. Snagged them off a Z28. The mufflers were never used and the pipes have been stored in a garage for the last 12 years. Was very happy with the condition of these parts, and the price couldnt be beat!!!

Hope to pick up the engine soon. Found out its a 305HO. Not a 350, like I was hoping. I guess, for $200 and a for sure running motor, I shouldnt let it pass....unless I can find something better for the same price.

Looking for a good 350T trans w/ torque converter for around $100 too.
