Going to look at a lq4 in a few and was curious what it costs to refresh one of these?

    Rings?
    Bearings, main and rod?

Anyone care to link me to something like this on summit?

The motor im going to look at is supposed to have less than 20k on it, but has been sitting for 2 years, so I want to do bearings and rings to make sure shes good to go before I put this thing in the car, im trying to not pull the motor out next year, lol.

With only 20K on it I wouldn't bother. Rings and bearings don't go bad just sitting....valve springs on the other hand will but it takes alot of years.

Thats the thing, "supposedly" has less than 20k miles. Unless I see some sort of proof, id feel alot better giving it some love before dropping it in.

I should be able to just run a leakdown on it once I get it home right? Even though its cold I should be able to get an idea, or no?

Not worried about springs, its getting new duals.

rod bearings are normal SBC stuff. cheap. i probably wouldnt touch it though. to do rings correctly is has to be honed with a torque plate

            Just got back.

Motor looks good and clean, block is casting number 12551364, which could be an lq4 or lq9. Im assuming its an lq4. Externally is there any way to tell the difference?

Ran into one thing that really worries me, it has an electronic throttle body, while I dont give 2 shits about the actual throttle body, they started putting the 58x reluctor wheel in them when they started putting the electronic throttle bodys on them, or somewhere in that time frame. If thats the case I need to find another motor. Does anyone know if theres any way to tell what type of motor this (24x/58x) is without pulling the pan? I assume its a 24x the more I think about it as the cam sensor is in the back of the block, not the front cover, can someone confirm.

Last thing, got to talking to the guy, he honestly doesnt know the mileage on the motor. It does look to be in good shape, but have no idea, and this scares me, I dont want another 5.3 incident....

            Thoughts?
            Picture uploading....

Buy it. That thing looks clean, if its rear cam sensor its 24X. Don't worry bout rings and bearings, they'll be fine. Once you get that stocker cam out you'll get a better view of things

If you concern is mileage, I would find an engine with mileage that can be verified, either by original owner or a junkyard (Warranty usually included)

Psh. I just got my invoice from Advanced Induction and it's around where I figured but 500rwhp and they said the setup will spin 8000k reliably.

So you're on your own for the rotating assembly =p

Going to try and pickup that lq4 later this week, get it torn down and painted, maybe try and order some springs and cam this week as well? Start pulling the existing setup at the same time.

                            Cam suggestions for 4xx rwhp?

Why not use the cam you already have? Chances are yur gonna make more power.
