On the Cap, the studs on the inside will have a carbon buildup, or the posts will be eroded away completely.

If the posts just look furry (carbon buildup) you can gently clean them off with emry cloth or a file gently, and then blow it out with compressed air. See if your miss goes away.
I'd still do a basic tuneup on it.

i was planning on it, when i bought it the guy said he started just replacing stuff when it srated misfiring, so all ignition is new, he did plugs and wires, and ive heard alot the something in the cap and rotor goes bad easily in these so ive been hoping its just that so i dont have to tear apart the heads or anything. i have a garage full of tools, but i dont want to screw anything up just because i may not know what im doing. i have a pretty good clue though

If the components look new you might be alright.
Check to see that all spark plugs have been gapped correctly. I believe your truck is supposed to be at 0.040" - double check your emissions sticker.

I'd still check the ignition components - never can be too sure what some people do/say to sell a vehicle.

i looked at it today, he said number 2 was the misifring one so i checked the gap and it was.035 which it say is suppose to be on the sticker. so im going to take the rest out check them and then move my way to the cap and rotor, because i think i have one for the camaro laying around. 85 305 carb and 88 350 tbi they might interchange.

so a little update if anyone is even folowing this thread anymore. i checked the cap and rotor, coil, wires, and the rest of the plugs which all visually look new and functional. i put a tarp over the truck last night and layed down there with a heater on the cold hard ground to change oil, and trans filter and fluid. had a little complications with the oild filter seal on the neck of it but eventually got it figured out. as for now, im not doing anything to it today, im bringing it to school tomorrow, and run the obd 1 on it to check for any codes that might help. if that leads me to anything ill compression test it and hope to diagnose the issue. i also found out last night that i need to definitely flush the radiator because its nasty colored, but the engine still runs really cool, but im not gonna take my chances. i got some injector cleaner and trans additive for the truck yesterday also that i plan to run in it.

Hmm... That may be a clue.
Is it oily, or boogery? Like a dark rusty water color, or does it resemble chocolate milk?
You could have a bad head gasket or cracked head causing a misfire.

Do the compression test first, then do a chemical test looking for combustion gasses in the radiator. Supposedly it is the only true way to catch a bad head gasket.

You CAN have good compression, but still have a blown head gasket.
The Auto parts stores rent the OEM tool to do it. I bought one as I've done so many intake/head jobs that it became a necessary tool to have.
Another quickie/Free way, is start the truck up, and watch the water in the radiator...does it bubble?

If all the above looks good, flush it well, back flush the heater core carefully, and you should be set.

its dark brown, but its not rust, you can sorta tell if theres any particles in it or any sedimenat at the bottom, its clean in the sense that theres nothing flaoting around, but it looks dirty. i think my teacher has the tools to do that so ill do it there, and if that can cause a misfire it may be a good thing if its fairly inexpensive

the truck made it to shop today and back. we hooked up the diagnostic tool to it, and something for second gear isnt hooked up rightwhich might be the wire just laying there, and it read codes 042 and 043, which is something to do with electronic spark timing. we also pulled off each indidvidual plug wire and it seems as though 2 and 3 arent making any difference when the wire is off. so im getting closer, im hoping its just ignition, because i dont want to tear into the engine at all. also the brakes got quite soft when i was driving and the truck is sealed quite nicely so i couldnt really hear outside of it to determine wether i just need to bleed them or if i need new pads and shoes

got the misfire fixed, apparently the timing was way too advanced, and the timing light at school apparently doesnt work correctly because it said it was fine

If it looks clean, do a compression check of all cylinders. That will help narrow things down.
I can only agree so much. I have done the same thing with my distributor rotor and cap and it has narrowed things down. Great post.

well i have gotten it fixed, no one wanted to post on my thread so after awhile i just left it be, it was just lack of attention on some things, tming, plugs, coil, and stuff like that fixed it. it does have a slight cam which is why i though it wasnt firing correctly. recently i redid the whole front suspension, worked out an issue with the fuel pump, and did an few new fuel lines. i got a cupholder tray from the junkyard that i mounted and i have an overhead console with map lights that im lookung to put in. lately the thought of maybe selling and trading it came to mind, not because i dont like it, i just want something else, dont get me wrong its a great truck and i have no complaints, but i want something a little newer.
