It will change from mix to mix, even through the summer. Its not as bad with a fuel injected car because of the way the computer will compensate. But with a carburator, the change is more noticable. Eric L
He has Megasquirt, so it's pretty sensitive. Maybe he's gotten lucky with it being pretty consistent.
Tweaking it really isn't that bad, as you can generally just do an overall change and it's fine.

That's aluminum for ya - Tony, you probably could run even higher compression with E85.
Larry, yes, it has a lower btu (and thus less energy per unit) and in an engine with the same compression ratio as one that runs gas, it will get worse gas mileage.
Now - if you set an engine up to run E85, you can up the compression ratio - as you do that, you are increasing the efficiency of the engine, pushing more power, and making use of the octane, and lessening the effect of the lower energy E85 contains.

I could definetly run more compression. But the deal I got on the pistons was too good to pass up. I realize on the late model motors that they can handle more compression on worse fuel. But this is an old school build. No computers or knock sensors on this one! The way I've been told as far as E85 mixes changing is that the change comes with the change of seasons. As the temps drop, they will change the mix closer to 70/30. As I only drive this in the summer, I don't think it will be much of an issue. I do plan on picking up a tester though, so that I can monitor the fuel that I'm getting.
The mix DOES change from batch to batch even in the summer. And it is sensitive to temp change and humidity. Espically with a carburator. I deff think E85 is cool, but I personally dont think its the be all and end all that its made out to be. Sounds like a cool build, im diggin on it. But just remember that every fuel has its down falls. Be careful, and dont believe every E85 nut hugger you talk to, lol. I ran into a LOT of those in my research just trying to sell ya parts or get you on the band wagon. Some would just outright lie, it was crazy. A lot of conflicting information. Again, sounds like a cool build, I will be following along. But, try to get that compression as high as you can. Contour the domes, cut the heads, etc. Eric L

I realize what your saying about the batch changes. Nothing comes without a price. But I have talked with a lot of guys running this stuff. (Not the guys selling there crap) And overall has been very positive.
Ok, Been a while since I was able to update this post. Or work on my Firebird for that matter. Spent most of the winter working on my buggy. (below pic) Anyway, The motor is assembled and I just got it in today. Picked up a tighter converter. Went from 5400 to a 9in 4000 stall. Also, some good news. I had posted that the motor would be 12.7-1. But after refiguring the data with a decent calculator that figured in the block being decked puts me at 13.8-1. Anyway I still have to get the car together, update the carb and fuel system. And then will come the tuning. Hope to have it tuned and ready to go for the Meet and Greet.
Thanks on the buggy. It should be ready for next summer. The carb requires new Metering plates, power valves and squirters, jets, accelerator pumps, floats, Stainless needle and seats, and idle mixture screws. In other words, everything on the inside of it, and a couple things on the outside. Also the pump, regulator, fuel filter, and the rubber lines all need to be E85 compliant. And be able to supply 30% more fuel than a comparable race gas setup.
Cars back up and running. Really wanted this car running for the M&G, but wasn't going to happen. Still should be ready for the Dyno Day. Still need to do some more work on this carb to get it to perform to what I want. Ordered 50cc accelerator pumps and larger again discharge nozzles. Can't believe how much fuel this motor wants. It looks like I really should have picked up a Dominator for it. Probably still will eventually. This pro-form 850cfm is kinda small for this motor. Should be road ready in about a week.
Who would of thought that an emissions friendly fuel could be used to make so much horsepower. Pity it isn't more readily available, I would have gone 13:1 on my last street car if I knew I could easily find the gas at the pump.

Got to love going green. haha. There are no stations within a couple miles of my house, but there are a handful on my way home from work. So if in my driving around town with the car I don't pass any stations to fuel up, I can always fill a couple cans on my way home from work. My only concern is long term availability.

Your not the only one. Hope to have it on the dyno June 25th. Motor sounds great. Not much louder, but you notice that it shakes the ground that it sits on.
Alright, I've had the car running for a while and figured I put some closure on this project. This project took alot longer than expected due to my other obligations. Works been 7 days a week most of the summer, and my rentals and family take up alot of whats left. Anyways, I had an SFI approved Harmonic Balancer that I spun earlier in the summer that I had a hell of a time figuring out the problem. Once I had that behind me getting the car tuned to run on E85 hasn't been very difficult. I will say that if your not really familiar with a Holley carb, you will want to leave it to the pros. I changed the metering plates, accelerator pumps, discharge nozzles, Air bleeds,(most of this stuff numerous times) and plenty of jets to get it tuned correctly. I would also highly recomend a good AFR gauge. Reading plugs is almost impossible with E85 as there is no fouling of the plugs to read. The plugs look as clean as the day I put them in. I have also seen no inconsistancies in any of the fuel mixes when I fuel up.
The car runs awsome. The car is very streetable and fast. I just got back from lapeer with a new personel best of 11.30 @122mph spinning like hell on the launch. With a new set of slicks and some adjustable rear shocks the times will come down some more. I may change the cam. As the cam that I'm running is from the old motor, and I could probably add another 50+ hp with a different cam.
