  • [Project] 89 camaro 5.3 swap

well just started my 5.3 swap in my 89 camaro. motor is out, i have the 5.3 already and test fitted it for hood clearance everything is good so far. my plans are using the truck intake, a tr 224 112 cam, upgrade valve springs and pushrods, timing chain. using truck wiring harness since it was free and using a truck pcm, tj at bakers said he wouldnt have any problems for what i want to do with using a truck pcm. im probly going with stock ls1 exhaust manifolds for now since 800 for headers probly isnt going to be in the budget this year. i am using my 700r4 since i have it built up and already have a 3000 stall convertor. i will try to post updates and pics but may be on a weekly basis because of the internet connection at home pics wont load on here.

Ditch the truck intake, your going to wish you did, and pick up a used set of headers otherwise I wouldnt bother with the cam, your going to really be choking the motor out.

why would he get rid of the intake, when I was reading your 5.3 thread everyone said to keep it because of the torque. now I'm confused

The truck intake makes slightly better torque, but its massive and probably won't even fit under the hood. If he really wants more power from an intake just buy an LS6 and be done with it.

My son is going to do either a 5.3L or LS1 swap in his 1981 Camaro. Going to be cool like yours.

The short runners of the truck intake really kill the motor beyond 5k or so, it just cant breath up there, trucks dont run at 5000rpms all day long, they have to pull a heavy load from a dead stop, the whole motor is designed that way, and with a cam, its just going to choke. Hell, my car falls on its face at about 5800, I just bought an ls6 intake, so I will have an ls1 intake coming off if you want it, but if your doing a cam you might as well just pick up an ls6 and be done with it.

Looks great!! I am in the process of swaping a 5.3 into my 88 Camaro. and I am retaining the truck intake with my car as well since I have a 4" cowl hood it fits perfect. I wanted the truck intake too since it provides more torque than the car intakes do. I am also in the process of modifying a set of Heddman long tube headers for a 3rd gen to fit into the car. Its rly not that much work to do just takes a while and you have to be good with a welder or know someone who is! I am hoping to get mine on the road in the spring. But if you ever need any help or information I have a ton of it I have collected over the past year during my build.

Keep up the good work! Cant wait to see it done!

you guys need to take a good look at Spencer's dyno chart he posted up in the other thread and see how bad the power drops off after 5300 rpms, now imagine it being worse with a truck intake. Your also gonna make just as much, if not more, torque with an LS6 intake.

thanks for all the coments, the reasoning for the truck intake is one i already have it , it has a fuel rail and injectors , and tb. this swap is gonna be on a budget. i might have to decide on long tubes or cam. i want both lol. but i also have a kid coming in less than 2 months.

I just picked up my complete ls6 intake. So I have an ls1 intake with car injectors, rails, and TB that id be willing to let go for cheap(when I get it off). Also if you just pick one up yourself you can use the truck TB with one easy quick mod, less than 60 seconds to do.

well put the hood back on tonight i have like 2-3 inches clearance on the truck intake and accessories so that pretty much decides that im using it for now. later down the road i plan on a ls6 intake and f body accessories. for now the free stuff works. i have pics that ill upload this weekend.
