I don't even reuse head bolts on junk engines in cars that are worth $700. You're a braver man than I am Larry.

The stock bolts on a 95 are regular head bolts. the torque to yeild bolts were 1st used on 1996 and up. You can identify them by the lack of hardness marks on the head of the bolt. The standard head bolts are harder and have the hardness strike marks. We went through this when we built B's engine. the 1st head was fine, the second head I broke 2 NEW head bolts and I was on 3rd torque pass going from 40 to 65 ft. lbs. Lucky that there was enough jaged edge that I could tap bolt out with a punch and didn't have to drill out and use easyouts. Prior to installing both heads I had run a tap through holes to clean threads.Originally posted by my1994z28 View PostHey guys the stock head bolts are torque to yield (TTY) which means they arent meant to be reused.I have my fingers crossed for you that everything works out..sigpic

Yeh - like dad said - and I don't even know 100% if it was 1996, I believe it was LS1 that they started using TTY specs.Originally posted by my1994z28 View PostHey guys the stock head bolts are torque to yield (TTY) which means they arent meant to be reused.I have my fingers crossed for you that everything works out..- Brian Meissen

Thats what the method for cleaning the head bolt holes is called. You roll up some paper towel and make it look like a tampon and stick it down in the bolt hole to remove any coolant that might have gotten down in there. If there is any fluid left down in the holes you can crack the block when you torque down the bolts...

I thought I did. tap spun out easily and I ran a used bolt in and out to make sure it was clean.Originally posted by DETROITMUSCLE View Postwow I think thats a first I have heard of someone breaking brand new head bolts, did you tampon out the holes well enough?sigpic

yep its just a method for cleaning out the bolt holes, in all honesty Larry I'd be surprised if something else didn't happen when you snapped off those bolts. I have seen an ARP head bolt that someone torqued to tightly (not broke) and they ended up cracking the block.Doing less with more

The only two things I can think of that they would break is one the bolt had a defect in it or two your torque stick isn't calibrated correctly anymore... have you ever dropped it...2013 Cadillac ATS

17 bolts per head. X2 thats 34 bolts. 32 torqued ok. I do have the old style also and I used that to check the torgue because I thought it was odd when the first on broke.Originally posted by LSxDreamer View PostThe only two things I can think of that they would break is one the bolt had a defect in it or two your torque stick isn't calibrated correctly anymore... have you ever dropped it...sigpic

Meh, so I realized I was being pretty hard on my dad in this thread. While I don't agree with every aspect, I know he's doing what he trusts to be right and he's trying to keep the cost down while also trying to get it back together as soon as possible. We all know if we took any other car to a mechanic all they'd do is replace the lifters and throw it back together. Dad's doing more than that so it's all good. I know he's just really anxious to drive his car again - I felt kinda guilty last night while I drove him around in the Camaro going on about how I missed driving my car for 2 days... he hasn't driven his in a couple weeks.- Brian Meissen
