  • [Project] POR 15 Question

Hi guy's I was looking for a little help on this one.

I'm looking at undercoating the underbody on the Formula this winter and have never used por 15. I've heard great things about it and i believe that's the route I'll be taking but por 15 makes there regular paint and then they have there rust protection stuff that you put right over the rust and it's suppose to I believe stops the rust. Well the underbody of my bird isnt rusty but there is one or two little spots that needs a little attention and the rear axle is a little rusty, but not to bad.

So my question is would it be best just to put the rust protection paint on the whole underbody that isnt even rust at all...or do i just put the rust protection over the rusty areas and the whole rest of the car just gets the regular por 15 paint?

    Any help would be great.

    Thanks in advance, Dave

I would use the regular por15. its more durable. The other stuff(topcoat, sterling silver) is meant to go over por15 because its UV sensitive and will turn chalky if its always in the sunlight

Yeah, I plan to do POR 15 to my car too. I understand it just like Larry said - POR 15 as the first coat, and then top coat over it if you want the UV durability.

Did the entire frame on a '50 Ford coupe with the black stuff and was very impressed with it

But it's just like it says on the label ...... if you get it on you, the only way it comes off is to wear off!

Try painting a car frame laying on your back and not get any on you LOL

the top cote has no rust prevention abilities. If you want to stop rust, you want the POR-15 rust prevention system with a top coat of paint of some sort.

You don't really need a top coat on the rust prevention stuff, as long as it's not going to be in sunlight.

DO NOT buy the gallon! You will have to put it all in a seperate container once you are done using it unless you are very careful not to spill any on the can. It is very difficult to get a can open once you have gotten then paint over the can. A little bit of this stuff goes a long way. I see you not needing more than a quart.

Yeah the 4oz starter kit covers 12 sq feet so I'd think the pint or quart should be plenty.
