  • Opinions wanted about Turbo Vs. Supercharger

Okay guys and gals so I'm thinking about putting a power adder on my 95 T/A convertible and Nitrous is out of the question. I have looked at a rear mounted Turbo System and an ATI procharger. What do you guys think is more reliable, better bang for the buck etc. It looks like they both make about 7-9 psi. I know all about the parasitic loss of turning a SC. I know the Procharger is intercooled and to be honest I don't know about the turbo. If anyone has run either of these on an LT1 Automatic car please let me know what you think.

Plan on rebuilding your motor with either. Buy the Procharger but get the D1SC that way you can run more boost once you rebuild it.

I'd disagree, low-moderate boost you shouldnt need to rebuild a whole lot sooner than if it was factory and raced. It all depends on your goals really. In my opinion I like nice clean supercharger kits for more than enough power than id ever need. Turbos have a lot higher power possibilities for the price but I like to cruise my car and love reliability. My vote is supercharger to give a little more giddyup and maintain some reliability, if a lot of power is your goal turbo is your choice. With either they will put more stress on your motor obviously..

LT1s dont like boost in stock form. They tend to grenade sporadically. Some live, some dont.... its just like revving a stock bottom to 7 grand. youre rolling the dice.

wow really? thanks for the info, I didn't know that. I assumed low boost would be safe, guess not in some cases!

                x2 to the above.

A lot of it depends on personal preference.

And how much money you have.

It sure seems that rear turbos have been the wave of the future. I really like the sound of a turbo spooling. Again that is personal preference.

Should have put a poll on this thread for voting!

D1SC with 5-6 lbs will live forever, now the trans might need some love after awhile. The tune up is very critical, no H/C just a blower the car will love life for a long time. As well the D1SC will give you a lot of growing room down the road. Rear mount turbos are cool but im not a big fan of having to run oil all the way to the back of the car while using an external oil pump.

Let us know your goals with the car and I'll give you my input as many people have mentioned LT1 cars don't do well boosted and depending on your intentions nitrous would be just as good as either of those. Stupid people that don't know what they are doing give nitrous a bad name, its just as safe as a turbo or supercharger if you have the proper equipment and tuning.

Of the boosting systems availible... Centrifugal superchargers and Rear mount turbos are at the bottom of my list

Centrifugal supercharges dont build boost till high rpm and rear mount turbo's loose most of the efficiency benefits of exhaust heat

If the discussion is about a Positive displacement supercharger or a large single or twin turbos mounted on the manifold, then we could talk more in depth...

but for a low power application both are ample. We had a gto at school with the sts system and it made like 550 hp untill some students let it lean out and it blew. but thats ample for a street app.
on another note this could probaly be done with out a power adder for the same cost but it would not sound as cool
