  • Do any of the DIY header coatings work?

Just as the title says, have any of you guys had any good luck with the DIY high-temp exhaust stuff?

I'm trying to remember what we used on my dad's headers but whatever it was it sucked. The paint completely peeled and is pretty much gone from his headers. I used VHT Flame Proof on my new exhaust and I was impressed with how well it appeared to "bake in" once I followed the bake procedures. 10 minutes idle, let it cool down, 20 minutes idle, let it cool down, drive around various RPMs for 30 minutes, let it cool down, enjoy. Now my paint job feels very smooth to the touch and I tried scratching it with a wrench and it didn't chip or flake at all.... But the exhaust is cooler than the headers are.

I have used POR 20 without baking it on and I would say its held up decent for what it is, not ideal but better than no coating at all. On the other hand Kyle (MP81) used it on his cobalt header and it came off almost immediatly each time.

        Also used POR 20.

Its not the best thing in the world but it helps resist rust and looks decent.

Iv used alot of differant brands and have never had any good luck with it. i would just go to jet hot and have them done if you can. in the long run it will save you money over doing the DIY system then have to send them out anyways and pay for additional cleaning.

Tried VHT high temp header paint on Kolin's car... Only had them on for a year, and they were starting to get rust spots pretty bad.

I got a header for my DD, it was cracked, so I had to remove some of the ceramic coating it had to clean it up before welding. It's on the back side, so I may just use some POR 20

Do you remember by chance was it VHT Flame Proof or something else? I've been racking my brain trying to remember what I bought for dad's car -- I'm almost positive it was VHT but it seems like the VHT Flame Proof I used on the hooker exhaust is a lot better quality than what I used on my dad's headers... Can't remember if it was the same product or maybe something different?

POR 20 burned off my header within 10 minutes.

                  Twice.

Followed their instructions, but still burnt right off. They ended up refunding my money.

Had it ceramic coated and haven't looked back.

QC Coatings, where I had mine ceramic coated, is in Shelby Township. They did my header (including all prep work, sandblasting, etc) inside and out for $70.

Id have to agree, i painted my muffler with it and it held up awesome, but tried it on my headers and it completely peeled off by the time the heat cycles were through..
