  • Flowmaster 80's or Magnaflow (Both with catback)

I recently learned as of last Sunday that me & my wife are going to become parents for the first time (I am so excited have to tell everyone), so I have to put of my plans of building my 5.7 into a small block 383 (which I was going to spend close to 4500 on)until after the baby is born and we are settled. I am glad I found out because I had the money and my builder was set to start as early as next week. I am going to do small projects because obviously we need the money right now. However, I am allowed to get some headers & a full catback exhaust which will only cost around 800 installed. I need help trying to decide on Flowmaster 80 series catback system or Magnaflow.

These are the headers I was looking to buy as soon as possible

I have listened to both on youtube & still can't decide. If anyone has videos of thier cars with either system please post. Thanks in advance.

Easy decision. Flowmaster 80s flow horribly. A lot of people have said they actually flow worse than stock.

Thanks Kyle, I have heard that as well, I just love the sound of flowmaster. I am looking for it to be kind of loud. But I would like for it to ptovide better performance. What about the 40's?

40s flow awesome, but usually that means you are running true duals which are an entirely different ballgame. Very loud, smelly, throw dust all over your car, drone really badly on the highway. But at the same time, TDs flow better than anything, and sound incredible.

I really don't want the tips to be seen anyway, The turndowns are what I want, cutoff under the car. I can't find the 40's on jegs. What do you think of these?

Magnaflow is a very good budget stainless steel exhaust. Flows awesome, looks great, but it is arguably the quietest aftermarket catback available. If I were you I would look into a Hooker catback. Cost effective, sounds AWESOME, flows great, just an all around good exhaust. Only negative is that it isn't stainless, but that doesn't bother me too much. And for you it will show tips.

If you want to go true duals just search flowmaster 40 series on ebay. It will pop up lots of results, including some knock of brands that are still very good. I believe both Joeliusz28 and kyleozzie used knock off brands and both of their cars sounds great. Also look for an x pipe.

I have an excellent condition Hooker catback for sale for cheap if you're interested. Have it listed for $150 but will go cheaper if you pick it up soon.

Just so you're aware, 4th gen catback systems will work on a 3rd gen with slight modifications. Mainly where the converter would be.

Hooker Super Comp long tubes, no cats, h-pipe and flowmasters with turndowns. Nice sound, crappy ground clearance. There just isn't a lot of room under a thirdgen to do true dual exhaust correctly.

Thanks for the pics, those mufflers are so close to the ground! I think I am going to go with a catback

It's considered one of the quietest catbacks. It's probably pretty simliar to a Magnaflow in loudness, but it has more of a gurgly/hollow sound like a Flowmaster without all the resonance.

And as mentioned, it should fit onto a 3rd gen pretty easily. It came with my 97 WS6 that I bought as a roller. The intermediate pipe was slightly altered to bolt up to a custom Y-pipe that was on the car by the previous owner, but that's no big deal since you'd have to have the pipe modified slightly to bolt up to a 3rd gen anyway. I'll sell it for $125 if you pick it up in the next day or two.

Here's a video I found on Youtube (not my cars) that shows you how a Hooker Catback sounds on a basically stock car (it's not usually raspy like the camera makes it sound like on the LT1):

I have had Hooker catbacks on both of my LS1 cars and I love them. LT's really wake them up.
