no, im going to leave all that... i dont like butchering stuff because my car is in primo original shape. its not hurting anything there, and besides itll look like i have my emissions at a glance

Thats true.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28no, im going to leave all that... i dont like butchering stuff because my car is in primo original shape. its not hurting anything there, and besides itll look like i have my emissions at a glance
All it does it stuff air into your exhaust so the catalyst can work properly. Theoreticly this creates drag on the motor but I doubt youd see a difference HP wise.

as far as i know its only functional on a cold start during high idle. im pretty sure its the hissing sound you hear during that period of time.Originally posted by MattODoomThats true.

On a thirdgen there is a diverter box. while the motor is cold air is pumped in the manifolds to help combustion there and warm the O2 up, once the car warms air is diverted down a tube and into the catalytic converter.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28as far as i know its only functional on a cold start during high idle. im pretty sure its the hissing sound you hear during that period of time.

um what do you mean by that?? pumping air into the manifolds is how the air gets to the cats right?Originally posted by MattODoomOn a thirdgen there is a diverter box. while the motor is cold air is pumped in the manifolds to help combustion there and warm the O2 up, once the car warms air is diverted down a tube and into the catalytic converter.-Joel

THIRDGENS have a diverter box. The better F-bodies only have the upstream air inlet.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28um what do you mean by that?? pumping air into the manifolds is how the air gets to the cats right?

Okay... ill try to explain it a little better. This is for thirdgen though.Originally posted by JoeliusZ28um what do you mean by that?? pumping air into the manifolds is how the air gets to the cats right?
Off of the air pump there is a box with a valve that diverts the air one of 3 ways, manifolds, cat, and atmosphere(dumps it).
When the car is warming up the air is pumped into the manifolds right by the exhaust port. this causes combustion in the manifold which in turn heats it and allows the oxygen sensor to come up to temp faster.
Once the car hits closed loop (o2 is warm) the little valve diverts the pumped air down a tube which goes into the catalytic converter. When it comes out in the cat it helps the catalyst lower emissions.
Under certain other circumstances the air is diverted to atmosphere (things like WOT I think...)
Aparently you guys dont have the box, just the pump and manifold inlets. Prob worth keeping just for the O2 warming effect.Originally posted by Insomnya3AMTHIRDGENS have a diverter box.
My car has neither. So does that make it the best FBody?Originally posted by Insomnya3AMThe better F-bodies only have the upstream air inletLast edited by MattODoom; August 14th, 2006, 10:30 PM.

And the best F-Bodies ('67-'74) don't have any of that stuff. Just muscleOriginally posted by Insomnya3AMTHIRDGENS have a diverter box. The better F-bodies only have the upstream air inlet.
