  • advice on after market air intake

I have always installed aftermarket air intakes on my trucks but i was kinda planning on leaving the camaro stock. But after inspecting the stock system on my 98 z28 i realized it is in bad shape. the edge of the lid is broken off and i dont think its sealing properly, and the tray was hacked at by what looks like a 3 year old with a sawzall. I have come to believe that aftermarket intakes are a waste of money sometimes but that may be my best bet since no salvage yards around here have any z28's. and there must be 15 salvage yard in the flint area. any ideas from you guys running aftermarket systems?

For all you guys running aftermarket intakes, did you feel a "sotp" increase? I know on my 5.3L silverado it didnt help much except at higher rpms. I have run K&N FIPK's, and a King Cobra intake system.I may be intrested in buying someones stock system in a few weeks. Right now i'm putting cash into ball joints, tie-rod ends and probably front springs since one side sits almost a inch lower, which is very noticable. Thanks

I dont think you "feel" much of a difference, maybe way in the top end,but I doubt it....you can hear it suckin tho, thats my experience, with the FIPKII....I dont think you'll feel much on any CAI,but I do think they help.

I never noticed a real SOTP feel but just a lid has been proven to add 7rwhp or more.

Trust me guys after driving my car without a lid for 6 yrs, you will notice a SOTP increase. The car would break the tires loose in 1st at about 3000 rpm from a slow role in gear(M6). It never did that before I installed the lid.

kinda sounds like the previous owner tried to make some homeade ram air and just did a crappy job?lol personally im too cheap to buy a lid or air intake, so i cut the bottom plastic cleanly by the radiator, then i just shaved off my ridges inside the lid, then i added a pvc pipe to take place of the restrictive baffle, then added a k and n filter, and slapped the k and n sticker over my red painted pvc, looks just like store boughten lol. Aside from the k and n it only costed me like 3 bucks for new clamps and stolen pvc pipe from work i think i have pics in the modifications link of the site in my sig.. and heres a pic also, sry bout the dirty engine, caps are off and it needs cleanin

Get a SLP lid, they're like $90 from Summit. They were tested to be the top lid a few years ago when they come out. I did feel a slight sotp difference when I put mine on. But I also did a smooth bellows and a TB coolant bypass at the same time. So, when you do it, go to Home Depot and get a Fernco hose in the plumbing section, its like $4, its like a 4" long 4" diameter rubber piece with clamps on it. Put it on between your MAF and TB. You may have to shave a little of the bottom on the TB side cause of the angle to get the top all the way on. Then I'd also recommend getting a fitting and clamps to do the TB coolant bypass, just disconnect the hoses from the TB and run them together with the fitting.

I also knocked the screen out of my MAF that day, some say it helps, not sure if it did but it can't hurt IMO. Just be careful of the sensors in there.

The hacking in the lower portion of your airbox was probably somebody trying to do the FRA - Free Ram Air mod. The idea is to cut out the top of the air dam for the radiator and the bottom of the airbox to allow some of that high pressure air to get into the airbox and creat a ram air effect. It does make a difference. I'd maybe clean it up but it sounds like that's what it is, if so its worth it.

Jasen is 100% in the fernco MOD statement (although it's 3"), also do the TB bypass. Even though it has no proven HP gain, it seems like everyone is doing it. I would not reccomend descreening the MAF, but that's just me.

Yeah the screen on the MAF evens out turbulence so the MAF is able to get an accurate sample of the mass of the incoming air. It just smooths it out so there is no dense spots and low pressure spots.

Prev owner removed my MAF screens but I put the front one back on.
