I'm in need of some advice for replacing my muffler on the Formula. . . It currently has a Flowmaster 80 Series Single In/Dual Out muffler, with stock tips, stock cat, and stock manifolds. I'm going to upgrade to headers next year, but for now, I'm looking for a little more noise. I want to get a direct replacement muffler for the Flowmaster that is going to flow better and give me a better sound. I'm looking at a couple of different options, but I still have no idea. Any help is appreciated.

Id just remove the cat. There isnt much mufflers thats going to be louder than the flowmaster. Unless you got a loudmouth set up.

I have stock exhaust manifolds cat eliminated with straight pipe and flowmaster single in dual out. I sounds very good. taking out the cat will increase the noise and not cost a lot until you get headers and decide what your doing.sigpic

I would normally be all for a test pipe to replace the cat, but in all honesty, with the amount of moving around I'll be doing in the next 4 1/2 years, I'm likely going to have to register the car in a state that requires smog/emissions testing. That means I need to keep a cat on the car.
That said, I'm also looking for suggestions for a new cat as well, since I was told that my cat is bad today. I'm going to have to get it replaced pretty soon, since the flange is also bad, and it's causing a pretty bad exhaust leak directly below the passenger seat. . .Nick H.

You wont even make it to the sniffer test with longtubes so why waste your time with keeping the cats...Originally posted by 93formulalt1 View PostI would normally be all for a test pipe to replace the cat, but in all honesty, with the amount of moving around I'll be doing in the next 4 1/2 years, I'm likely going to have to register the car in a state that requires smog/emissions testing. I think he could pass emissions with longtubes just as long as he has a catted y-pipe, that being said you should either find a dirt cheap replacement for your current cat or put a straightpipe in until you put the headers on.Doing less with more

nick, i think you should take larry up on his offer and just putva straight pipe or gutted cat from your current set and put larrys ypipe and cat on when you go in for testing. you can enjoy more flow now and pass emissions with just a few bolts. i will be headed larrys way to pick up parts for the 86. you may want to tag along and maybe we can also find a window switch at the same time. if you pick up the gas we can take the exploder and ill reimburse you later.

If they have a visual test you would fail with longtubes simply because they move the cats farther back from there stock location.Originally posted by DETROITMUSCLE View PostI think he could pass emissions with longtubes just as long as he has a catted y-pipe, that being said you should either find a dirt cheap replacement for your current cat or put a straightpipe in until you put the headers on.

Sounds good, but I think we'll take my grandpa's Silverado instead. . . If I'm covering gas, we might as well ride in style. . . lolOriginally posted by phoenix_rising View Postnick, i think you should take larry up on his offer and just putva straight pipe or gutted cat from your current set and put larrys ypipe and cat on when you go in for testing. you can enjoy more flow now and pass emissions with just a few bolts. i will be headed larrys way to pick up parts for the 86. you may want to tag along and maybe we can also find a window switch at the same time. if you pick up the gas we can take the exploder and ill reimburse you later.
Larry, I'm interested. Name a price and a time that I can pick it up, Ben and I should be out your way later today (Thurs, 8/27). My car is in pretty dire need of a new cat, and I'm not too interested in spending big bucks to replace the stock one with a universal-fit type at a muffler shop. I'm planning on taking a road trip in a couple weeks, so the extra gas mileage would be a big help too. I'll send a PM your way in a minute with my contact info.Nick H.

I don't have longtubes. . . Still running stock manifolds. Heck, I still haven't even upgraded to a CAI yet. My car is almost completely stock, performance wise at least.Originally posted by c0ncEpT View PostIf they have a visual test you would fail with longtubes simply because they move the cats farther back from there stock location.Nick H.

Just letting you know that having cats with headers doesn't make it legal period. So why waste your time and $ on a catted set up when you can go catless for $20 now and save your self another $100 on a catted ypipe in the feature.
