  • Joels header install progress thread (big pictures)

Started on this friday, worked on it for about 4 hours that day and got the following done. Moving along pretty good so far IMO.

Stage 1 of getting the car in the air, also paste waxed the hell out of the front end:

Stage 2 of car height, also bra, towels and other protective debris added:

Again, notice the bumper in comparison to that trash can that has to be 4ft tall:

Alternator, serpentine belt, MAF, STB, battery, elbow, CAI and starter (not pictured) removed:

Soaking the factory y-pipe in PB Blaster:

2 hours, 2 cuts, 10 bolts, 1 can of PB Blaster, and a terrible bruise later, this came out:

what will be replacing the factory junk:

Just to make this thread a little more worth your while, heres a random pic of my car at the clem the wednesday before. My uncles '70 AAR Cuda is on the left. The latter is probably my dream mopar in every aspect possible.

enjoy im probably going to try and tackle at least one of the manifolds today. i think it would be generous to describe the passenger side as a b!tch and 3/4 though!!!

i remember doing headers on my car, i dont know how hard an LT1 car is, but just take your time and do it right, its not to hard just time consuming, but its worth it in the end, trust me

good luck and dont beat your hands up to bad like i did, some mechanics gloves come in handy (i didnt use them )

All i got to say after seeing those pics is

^&*^ fourth gens! Wow I could never work on that. I thought getting at the #8 plug on the third gen was time consuming (about 2 mins for that plug).

Can't imagine having to do that. If you get it done you get mad kudos, and kudos to all other 4th genners that have done headers!

LOL i IMed you with a question before i even saw this.

and yea matt its def a bia. i cant even get a visual on half the bolts on the passenger side so im not looking forward to it. right now im having a little trouble getting the air fittings out but i think ill be able to do it with a crow wrench from my dads work.

Im also trying to figure out if i can cut the ends of the manifold studs off so i can get a socket on them... Im afraid of the nut breaking loose.

i heard LT1 cars are harder to do than LS1 cars, but its worth all the frustration in the end

                      drivers side is out!!!

passenger side is 90% out, but is till hanging on by one bolt that IS REALLY PISSING ME OFF!!! lol. its the very front one... some genious thought it would be a good idea to mount a FOURTH alternator bracket to the manifold bolt there, and there is absolutely no way from what i can see to get a wrench in there, i havent even been able to determine what size bolt it is.

Im leaving that bolt til later, gonna go see a movie tonight. Ive been moving along pretty good though i think.

I have problems with the y-pipe hitting the floor, my buddy josh in the red camaro has problems with it hitting the floor. And we dented in his pipe/floor some...

did you guys do motor mounts? I was hoping i could let that go... all this stuff is really hurting my wallet as is, its looking like i gotta replace an 02 sensor now too... wires were chewed to shreds and i rounded the sensor off with a CLOSED end wrench trying to break it loose!!

im really starting to debate not doing cats... this is getting to be a lot of pocket change.

Nope, we didn't do motor mounts and now we have problems. Josh really doesnt have to bad of a problem since we dented his floor/ y-pipe. I have to have rubber heater hose jammed in their which is really starting to get on my nerves because it is not right.
