alright, so i got the kooks and borla system installed. everything sounds great and the power gain was ridiculous. only one problem. sometimes when i try to take a turn (left or right) i hear almost a grinding noise and i can feel that its coming from the rear end. im fine when im just going straight. i asked one of my gearhead managers about it (he has a couple of gsxs) and he says that it sounds like a common problem that muscle cars have, rear wheel hop is what he called it, when you add a lot of power (pushin around 330 at the wheels) and dont do anything to the rear and that i should look into modifying the gears. this is the first time i have ever put any kinds of modifications into a vehicle and quite honestly didnt expect the power gain to be so much. does this make any sense?

if its a squeak, thats a normal issue with 10 bolts on corners... mine does it, but a grind probably is not. those guys are right about you having 330 to the wheels on the stock rear end though. Matt here has gone through like 3 10 bolts now with around 375 to the wheels ( i think ??? )-Joel

yeah, i get the squeak all the time and never thought anything of it. but a grind concerns me. i got the parts installed at livernois, i know ive heard a lot of good and bad things, im thinking about jsut taking the car back and asking them whats going on. as far as the rear, what would be recommended? after the install of that borla and kooks, im trying to save some cash so what i can come up with now is just to not take corners like crazy. but in the long run.... ...

Did you watch they installed your parts? I always demand to watch when mine is being worked on.

i usually take the car to a family friend for any kind of work so not only do they usually let me watch when doing anything to my car, but sometimes they let me poke around under the hood with them too. thats the best way for me to learn whats going on. however, i did decide to go to livernois for this install and i wasnt able to get the time off of work so it was unmonitored. i figured that it would be easy to spot if anything was going wrong with these parts.

A good idea, I do too.Originally posted by 02redz28Did you watch they installed your parts? I always demand to watch when mine is being worked on.
Is it an M6 or a A4? If its an M6 you very well may be killing the rearend and the added power is accelerating its death. The M6 cars go through 10 bolts like crazy. The A4's hold up well. I'm probably sitting around what you are and I don't have any problems with mine, but I'm an A4.

No, the 10 bolt just signifies the 10 bolts that hold the differential cover on. Might wanna check the fluid in it, that would the first thing I did.Originally posted by MORNINGSTAR2101so is that what that grinding sound is? me just going through those 10bolts?

Jasen, not to shit on your parade or anything, but I can guarantee that w/ the addition on LT's and a catback she's not gaining more than 30 rwhp and that's not enough to crap out the 10 bolt. Well not unless she's taking 3-4k clutch dumps. Are you sure it's coming from the rear end. You mentioned that it happened when you'd turn. If I were you I'd also check the stearing linkage up front. I have seen some clearance issues after installing LT's. Just my .02. MikeOriginally posted by Orange_TerrorA good idea, I do too.

it's possible that your rear end is already going...like joel said, i just blew my rear end. the inexpensive fix would be just to get a replacement gear set from SLP (which are AAM gears...good company!) and then get them installed at a good drivetrain shop.
im sorry that you went to livernois...i have heard NOTHING BUT HORRIBLE THINGS ABOUT THAT SHOP. not only are they a mustang shop, they treat most cars like crap there...i could rant about how much i hate that shop all day.......
for a new ring/pinion gear set, install kit, and someone to set it up for you, you're looking at about $500. i did that last fall, went from my blown 3.42 (stock) gears and went with 3.73's...that was a great jump. then i just blew the 3.73's again...and i said f#*$ it and threw down some loot for a bomb proof 9inch rear end with 3.89 gears.
bottom line, i would start with checking/changing the rear end fluid (if in fact it's your rear end that's the problem) 10 bolts really are not sufficent for LS1 F-Bodys stock, so it's not a huge suprise if it's going,1998 Camaro SS Bullseye Turbo

agreed agreed,, i would start by checking your entire front suspension and all your linkages in the front.. then go to the back and do the same. it is possible some bolt on component may be broke and rubbing on the ground when you turn as the car leans.. thus the grinding noise..
i would def recommend a ford 9 inch geared to suit your needs.. looking for goo driveability, or something to go fast? the higher you go. 3.73, 3.89.. and god help us. 4.11 or 4.72.. the faster youll be out of the hole, but the slower youll be total.. meaning, if you go with a 4.11 rear.. you may not be able to do 140 + on the free way ( which i wouldn't know anyone who would want that. *whistles innocently) but youll get up to speed faster.. or the lower you go.. 3.42, 3.08, 2.73, ect. the slower youll be out of the hole, but the faster youll be in the top end..
if money is a little tight.. a AAM rearend ring and pinoin that matt is talking about would be the best bang for your buck, and if your not doing 3 k + wholeshots every five feet like other unmentioned partys, then it will last you..
i can't see exhaust making enough horse to toast a rear in a couple of weeks.. unless you really got your foot in it at ever light.. exhaust or no exhaust.. that will happen.. the more stress we put on things.. the faster they break..
i would know.. stupid modified.
if you would like, and your not busy this weekend.. im sure if you come up to woodward if it is nice.. i could take a look at it for you...
hope everything works out for ya!
