I'm really tempted, however I think I should get a welder first and attempt something similar. I've seen his stuff on fbody.com and camaroz28.com. This looks pretty decent. I think one of my fellow LT1 guys needs to pick this up
I think I know who did this but I can't remember his name.

i believe its the high compression bottom end thats not designed for boost, nor strong enough for it with all cast parts. 10.5.:1 is too much for significant boost

What usually happens in these motors is the ring lands breaking on the pistons. Had a broken ring land in 2 of my pistons. Now I'm building a forged 355 that will see 15+ psi of boost with ported lt1's that flow 290 intake 200 exhaust with a blower cam as well. I would mash the throttle everytime I got in the car, because the feeling of boost is incredible , not to mention fun as hell. It was also my DD. If you boost the stock engine, chances are your going to break something. Most of us FI guys have allready gone down the same path: Boosting stock motor, breaking something, then building a forged lower. Seems like not many people build the engine first then add a power adder of some kind.
the bearings dont like it either, but thats just from the added stress.... a cam and head swap will take its toll on bearings too.

I disagree. If stock motors with cast parts don't like boost, why would a company like ATI produce and sell ProChargers for stock applications?
Maybe you meant to say stock motors don't like excessive boost i.e. ~14 psi or whatever you consider excessive. Or you meant to say engine service life is dramatically reduced when forced induction is added.
You can boost 10:1 compression with 12psi and live with it.

because the customer assumes the risk perhaps? almost any performance part you buy is going to add stress to some part of the vehicle. boost in particular IMO, is one of the more risky ones (specific to LT1 in this case)
in most cases yes, but ive seen a lot of stock LT1s with low milege on boost explode. also LT1s have 10.5:1 compression. people wouldnt build forged low compression engines for boost if the stock setup was ok for it. Yes you CAN run 12 psi on 10:1 and live, but if you drive it like youre going to WANT to drive it after the install... then sorry i disagree with you, it wont live. Ive seen LT1s get puffed on 6psi before.
If youre a boost fanatic i recommend building the LT1 first, or using the LS1 platform which has 3x stronger mains and forged parts making it a much safer platform for boost straight from the factory. I honestly dont have a full-fledged answer for why LT1s dont like it, im going off what ive read on the tech boards. Ive been reading LT1 tech on camaroz28.com weekly or more for years, and ive seen a lot of problems with boost on stock motors. if you simply build them for it, theyre great.

just checked my facts, youre right. Ive thought the LS1 was a forged crank ever since i can remember. at the very least, theyre still stronger their predecessor.
never read it... i mustve read something about LS1 cranks though to think they were forged though. and it better be stronger because its a newer design. The stock LS1 bottom end can handle higher RPMs, and it definitely isnt just the mains that are going to account for that difference.
you probably thought ls1 cranks were forged because they can basically hold the power of a forged crank.... MANY FI LS1 guys making over 1k hp running STOCK cranks.... pretty crazy but they are strong pieces. LS1's also have the ringland problems at much over 8-10 psi or a shitty tune. I believe you could make an lt1 run decent numbers on boost as well with a solid tune, whether your motor lasts is all in the tune....
As for the thread starter...... boost it, get it tuned professionally by a credible source (this will be the most crucial part of the entire build). If you push it too far and it blows, then just save up and build it better, stronger, and bigger of course Boost FTW!
